GoFrogs: TCU Sweeps Doubleheader

The Horned Frogs have set the program record with four straight sweeps to begin the season

FORT WORTH -- TCU women's tennis (4-0) swept its doubleheader this Sunday against Northwestern State (4-0) and Arkansas State (4-0) inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Freshman Jade Otway led the Horned Frogs with a perfect, 4-0 record across both doubles and singles matches as TCU begins its season with four straight 4-0 sweeps.

"Today was great for our team," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "I wouldn't be surprised if Northwestern State won their conference this year. Their coach has been doing a great job. We had to play some good tennis to close it out. Helena's singles effort was very professional. She had a great attitude today. To have a player in her first year be so physically and mentally tough is great to see. Alisa getting out there and getting her first singles match out of the way was massive. It's not easy for a tennis player to come back from an ACL injury. All the hard work that she has put in, it's just awesome to see her out there playing. We've started out with four 4-0 victories and I feel the confidence building. We're really happy with where we're at. We're going to bring a full roster up to Wisconsin on Thursday. We're really looking forward to that match."

Otway did not collect a win in last weekend's doubleheader. After winning her opening set in both singles matches, the Frogs had clinched the dual before she was able to tally her wins. This week, Otway wasted no time. Against Northwestern State, Otway recorded the first singles win of the day after clinching the doubles point with Isabel Pascual at No. 3. She got out to early leads in both singles sets, establishing her play early and maintaining pressure until the end, racking up the 6-3, 6-2 win. In the second match of the day, Otway stayed hot, clinching the doubles point again, this time with Alisa Soloveva at No. 3, before pounding her way to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. She came back from down, 2-3 in her second set, winning the final four games to earn her fourth victory of the day. In singles play, she won all four of her sets by at least three games.

Isabel Pascual played at a high level today at the bottom of the lineup, finishing 3-0 on the day, with two wins in doubles and a convincing straight set victory over Arkansas State. Pascual clinched the doubles point with Otway in the first match before blanking Arkansas State, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles, paired with Addy Guevara. In singles, Pascual won 11 of the final 12 games played to give TCU its first singles point of the match (6-3, 6-0).

The Horned Frogs won all 10 matches completed today, winning 19 of 22 completed sets. On the season, TCU improves to 8-1 in doubles matches this year and 12-0 in singles competition.

TCU boasts six upperclassmen on its nine-player roster but it was the underclassmen, today, that carried the load. Otway, Pascual (sophomore) and Helena Narmont (freshman) contributed four singles points, with Otway and Pascual combining to clinch the doubles point against NSU before each winning their doubles matches, with new partners, against Arkansas State.
