GoFrogs: Women Pick Up 20th Win at Oklahoma
NORMAN, Okla. – Double-doubles by seniors Jordan Moore and Amy Okonkwo led the TCU women's basketball team to its 20th win of the season and the first victory in program history in Norman as it defeated Oklahoma, 76-63 on Saturday afternoon at the Lloyd Noble Center.
The victory improves the Horned Frogs' record to 20-8 overall and 10-7 in Big 12 play while the Sooners fall to 8-20 and 4-13 in conference action.
Moore posted her seventh double-double in the last 12 games and 10th of the season, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds. It also marked her third consecutive 20-point game and 12th-such effort of the year. She added a career-high five assists, two blocks and a steal as well.
For Okonkwo, it was her third double-double of her senior campaign as she netted 12 points and 12 rebounds. All 12 of her points came in a crucial five-minute stretch of the third quarter in which TCU turned a six-point deficit into a six-point lead.
Felllow senior and Oklahoma City native Dakota Vann also had a strong contest, scoring a season-high 13 points, while Lauren Heard and Kianna Ray finished in double-digits as well with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Ray dished out five assists in the contest, upping her career total to 286 to move into the top-10 in TCU career history. Moore also made a move in the school record book, jumping Helena Sverrisdottir (826) into second on the all-time rebounding chart with 831 for her career.
The Rundown
Oklahoma came out firing on all cylinders, led by freshman guard Taylor Robertson who hit her first five shots, including four 3-pointers. She finished the first quarter with 14 points as the Sooners took an early 21-13 advantage.
The Frogs quickly erased a good chunk of that deficit by scoring the first five points of the second quarter but Robertson continued to have the hot hand and hit two more 3-pointers to push the OU lead up to as many as 10 at 38-28.
TCU put together another 5-0 run at the end of the half but the Sooners went into the locker room up by six, 40-34.
That lead would be short-lived, however, as Okonkwo led a TCU scoring onslaught by hitting four 3-pointers of her own in less than five minutes immediately out of the break to put the Frogs back in front.
After being held scoreless in the opening half, Okonkwo was 5-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range as she poured in 14 points in the third quarter alone.
The TCU defense clamped down as well, holding the Sooners without a field goal for the final 4:49 of the third quarter as it turned its six-point halftime deficit into a 54-49 advantage going into the final frame.
Moore and Vann then took over in the fourth, scoring nine points each as the Frogs continued to increase their lead throughout the stanza. The Sooners never got closer than four the rest of the game with TCU out-scoring them, 22-14, in the quarter to seal the victory.
Stat of the Day
20 and 10 – This season marks the first time since 2010-11 that TCU has reached the 20-win mark in the regular season and the 13th overall 20-win season in school history. After winning 23 games a year ago, the Frogs have now notched back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2010-11 as well.
The 10 conference wins are the most TCU has recorded since joining the Big 12 for the 2012-13 campaign. It had previously won nine league games both last season and in 2014-15.
Quotes of the Day
TCU Head Coach Raegan Pebley
"I am so proud of our team. To have 20 wins at this point in the season is a testament to their hard work, their growth, their investment in each other and their investment in their development as people both on the floor and off."
"Jordan is just working really hard to be a great leader for us. Her leadership shows itself by being consistent and holding herself accountable to performance. She is not just scoring for us, she is doing her job on the defensive end and the boards. She is a great testament that you are never a finished product. Just because it is your senior year doesn't mean that you are done growing. She has grown since conference started and I love that about her."
