Horned Frogs Drop Close Ballgame To Hartford Friday Afternoon

TCU led by as many as eight in the second half against the Hawks.

Final Stats | Notes

ORLANDO, Fla. - TCU led by as many as eight Friday afternoon, but wasn't able to hold off a late Hartford rally, falling 64-60 on the opening day of the Central Florida Thanksgiving Classic at UCF Arena. The Horned Frogs had several chances down the stretch to take the ballgame from the Hawks, who played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, but let a 57-54 lead with 3:17 left to go in the game slip away in the final minutes. Freshman Natalie Ventress appeared to have tied the game at 60-60 with 24 seconds remaining, but her three rattled out and Hartford (4-1) was able to escape following some key free throws by Daphne Elliott.

For a majority of the day, it appeared TCU, now 1-4 on the year, was on its way to its second win of the season, but the Frogs, who shot over 43 percent for the game from the field, couldn't shake a pesky Hawk squad who battled back time after time Friday. In all, there were nine lead changes and eight ties Friday in a grueling and physical contest.

The Horned Frogs, who led by three at halftime and by eight at the 7:37 mark of the second half, received several contributions from non-starters in Orlando, which resulted in a 35-12 advantage for the Purple and White in points off the bench. Chelsea Prince led the Frogs with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-3 from deep. The freshman also grabbed seven boards and three steals Friday afternoon. Junior Whitney Williams and senior Antoinette Thompson each scored 13 points apiece, respectively. Finally, Latricia Lovings also had a solid outing, grabbing a team-high eight boards, while posting her fourth game of the season with four or more blocks with five against the Hawks.

Elliott led the Hawk attack with a game-high 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor. Ruthanne Doherty was next with a double-double, scoring 11 points and tallying 11 rebounds. In all, Hartford was held to 36.4 percent shooting on 24-of-66 from the field.

In a back-and-fourth start to the second half, Thompson would score the Frogs first five points until Williams continued her hot shooting from deep to make the score 38-35 in favor of TCU. Prince would regain the Frog lead at 42-40, soaring into the lane and dropping the ball through the bottom of the net with a little over 12 minutes to go in the period. The freshman could not be denied the next trip down the court, following a miss and powering the ball through the rim to push the Frog lead to three.

With the game tied at 45-45, Williams darted into the lane and scored to regain the TCU lead at the 9:36 mark of the second half. Lovings then found a cutting Ventress who recorded an and-one on a tough three-point play.

With a little over 8 minutes remaining in the game, Lovings pushed a free throw miss by Thompson back to Prince to give TCU its biggest lead up until that point in the game at 52-45.

Hartford would crawl back into the game on a 10-3 run, but Lovings would come up with one of her five blocks in the game to preserve a 57-54 advantage at the 3:17 mark of the second half.

With 2:28 to go in the contest, Hartford scored five-straight points, including a triple as time expired on the shot clock, to take a 59-57 lead. The lead for the Hawks was their first in the contest since holding a 34-33 advantage at the 16:47 mark of the second half.

Williams then found Ventress deep in the corner with time running down, but the freshman missed the triple and the Frogs were stuck at 60-57 late in the game. Hartford was able to knock down some key free throws late to preserve the 64-60 victory.

In her first career start, Ashley Colbert got the Frogs on the board first, scoring on a turnaround tear dropper to give TCU a 2-0 lead early. Thompson then found a cutting Williams a few moments later, who's fader dropped to pull the Frogs within one at 5-4 at the 15:58 mark.

Following a 5-0 run by Hartford, Williams drilled a trey from the top of the key to bring TCU within 10-7 at the 13-minute mark of the first half. Briesha Wynn, who started for the first time this season, then found Lovings down low and the Frogs were in business, now only down 10-9.

After a steal by Thompson, Williams kicked the rock to a wide-open Prince who tickled the twine from deep to tie the game at 14-14 halfway through the first half. The freshman then got hot, scoring two of her three triples in the first half within a two-minute span, to push the TCU lead to 22-16 with 5 minutes to go in the half.

With the Purple and White up 24-16, the Hawks went on an 11-0 run to regain the lead.

Meagan Henson and Williams halted the Hartford rally by scoring consecutive three's as time ran down in the opening frame. Williams' was a thing of beauty, a running floater behind the line as time expired to push the halftime score to 30-27 in favor of the Frogs.

TCU will resume action in Orlando tomorrow against Fordham. Tip-off is set for 11:00 a.m. CT.
