GoFrogs: Volleyball Trio Earn All-Big 12 Postseason Honors

FORT WORTH, Texas – Three members of the TCU volleyball team were honored today, as the Big 12 Conference announced their 2018 All-Big 12 Volleyball Postseason Awards.

Freshman élan McCall earned double honors and was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team and the All-Big 12 Rookie Team. Senior Anna Walsh earned conference honors for the second straight year and joins McCall on the first team, while Tori Dilfer earns her first career honor with a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Team.

"All of our players understand that no one is presented these awards on their own merit," head coach Jill Kramer said. "These awards are representative of our teams daily efforts that they all put forth together."

McCall becomes the first freshman in program history to be named to the first team and to earn double honors in a single season. The rookie's unanimous selection to both marks a first in program history as well. The Leander, Texas native has been at the top of the Big 12 and nationally in kills and points since the first week of action. McCall won six weekly awards this season which is the most by any player in the conference including five Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors. Recently, McCall became the first player in program history to be named Sports Import/AVCA Player of the Week and VolleyMob Player of the Week. McCall finished the season ranked in the top 10 of the league in three categories with 4.74 kills per set, 5.21 kills per set, 3.26 digs per set and was the top freshman with 14 double-doubles.

"elan's fun-loving spirit and competitive greatness throughout our season speaks for itself," Kramer said. "She was sidelined with an injury for six conference matches, but in the other ten conference matches and twelve non-conference matches, she came up big for our team day-in and day-out as a six-rotation outside hitter leading our team in kills per set, digs per set and was solid as a primary passer. The amount of Rookie of the Week Awards she received are the most of any freshman in the Big 12 and are telling of her consistent effort throughout the season."

Walsh becomes the third player in program history to earn conference honors in back-to-back seasons after being named to the second team last fall. The senior was a consistent presence for the Horned Frogs playing in every set of every match and totaling 3.11 kills per set and a .274 hitting clip. The Preseason All-Big 12 selection totaled double-digit kills in 20 matches this season including 10 straight during conference play and hit above .300 in 13 matches. Walsh became the 11th player in program history to score over 1,000 career kills and finished her career with 1,152 kills which ranks sixth all-time in TCU volleyball history. The middle blocker continued to be a stout defender at the net with 0.86 blocks per set and stepped up at the service line with 10 aces this season.

"Anna carried a huge load for us offensively as a middle blocker," Kramer said. "She took the amount of swings that many outside hitters would take in a season and she was stellar from the service line for us this year as well. She has one of the best arm swings I've seen out of the middle in a long time and found a way to score when teams knew she was getting the ball."

Dilfer becomes the first TCU setter in program history to earn a postseason honor from the Big 12 Conference. Dilfer, who totaled 10 double-doubles during the season, guided the TCU offense and was the Big 12 leader in service aces from the very first week of action. The sophomore dished out 1,134 assists in 2018 and finished second in the Big 12 with 11.12 assists per set which sits at No. 5 in the TCU single-season record book. Dilfer was nearly unstoppable from behind the service line with 41 total aces and 0.40 aces per set which led the Big 12 and is tied for seventh in the single-season record book. The San Jose, Calif., native earned a spot on two all-tournament teams during the season and was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.

"Tori continued to learn, grow and make consistent progress throughout our season," Kramer said. "Since we had some key players in and out of the line-up, our offensive game plans needed to change often this year. Tori managed those changes well, and continued to get in the gym and improve her tempo and location, so that no matter who she was setting, she was giving them a hittable ball. The other parts of the game - her serve, her defense, her leadership - all play a part in what makes her a complete player."

TCU finished the 2018 season with an overall mark of 15-12 with seven wins in league action.
