GoFrogs: TCU Splits Series with Kansas State

FORT WORTH –
TCU Volleyball lost to Kansas State in four sets (25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 21-25) on Friday night inside Schollmaier Arena. The Horned Frogs couldn't find consistent offense after winning the opening set, dropping the match and splitting the series with the Wildcats, one win each.

TCU NOTABLES:
  • Senior Dani Dennison set the program record for consecutive matches played. She has played 127 straight matches over her career.
  • She led the team with 15 digs, improving her career total to 1,485 – the most in program history.
  • Dennison was strong in serve/receive, passing into a first ball sideout on nine of her 21 receptions (42.9 percent).
  • Sophomore Taylor Raiola recorded her sixth-career double-double and second in as many matches, finishing with 10 kills and 14 digs.
  • Raiola finishes the series vs. K-State with 25 kills (3.125/set) and 26 digs (3.25/set).
  • Junior Afedo Manyang led the offense in kills and attack percentage tonight. She made 13 kills on .400 hitting – marking her fourth straight home match hitting over .300.
  • Junior Julia Adams made 11 kills for her team-leading 12th double-digit kill performance.
  • Adams has made 204 kills this season, becoming the first Horned Frog to secure 200+ kills in three consecutive seasons since All-Big 12 first teamer Anna Walsh did so from 2016-18.
  • Senior Ashley Wehrstein delivered nine digs for the second consecutive match.
  • She finishes the series with 2.25 digs/set, her second-best output in a Big 12 series over her career (2.44 digs/set at WVU in 2020).
  • Junior Alexcis Lusby made her TCU debut tonight. She made her first kill as Horned Frog in the second set.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 25-23):
The Horned Frogs activated Myers and Cole in the middle to open up the offense and allow a great distribution of attacks in the opening set. By the end of the opening frame, six different Horned Frogs registered kills thanks to 15 assists from Nichols. Both sides made great defensive plays in the back row as Raiola and Wehrstein headlined the TCU efforts. The duo combined for 12 of TCU's 21 digs in a set where neither team led by more than four points throughout. Five Wildcat service errors were the difference, keeping TCU engaged in the match, down one point late, 20-21. From there, three kills from Myers and terminations by Adams and Raiola gave TCU the set. Raiola and Myers led the team with four kills each while Madilyn Cole recorded the lone TCU block.

Set 2 (K-State, 25-15): Errors came back to bite the Horned Frogs in the second set as the offense couldn't find a consistent rhythm. K-State broke the set open with a 9-1 run, taking a 21-10 lead. The teams would trade points until the end and KSU tied up the match. Raiola, Adams and Manyang each finished with two kills apiece. TCU made eight attacking errors and four errors at the service line to allow K-State to take the set.

Set 3 (K-State, 25-14): The Wildcats offense found another level in the third set that TCU couldn't seem to match. KSU went on a 5-0 run to go in front, 12-7, before winning the final four points of the set to win it by 11. The Wildcats hit .436 to TCU's .152 in the frame. Manyang was a bright spot for TCU, making four kills on five swings (.800 hitting) as Raiola collected five more digs.

Set 4 (K-State, 25-21): TCU came out aggressive in the fourth, feeding Manyang early on to give Adams and Raiola more space to work with on the pins. The plan was working, giving the Frogs a chance to close out the set, 17-17. But K-State's block made too many quality touches and the Wildcats would ride that to a 7-3 scoring run, going in front, 24-20 and winning the match two points later. Manyang made five kills in the final set on 10 swings to go along with three apiece by Adams and Raiola. Kansas State made five blocks. That, along with five service errors from TCU, doomed the Frogs.
