TCU Falls to Rice

Nalls delivers sixth 10+ kill match of the season in loss

Box Score

HOUSTON --
TCU volleyball (5-5) couldn't find the answer to Rice (11-1) Saturday afternoon, losing 3-0 inside Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. Freshman outside hitter Audrey Nalls led the team with her sixth double-digit kill match of the year but the Horned Frogs come up short on the road.

TCU NOTABLES:
  • Nalls led the team with 10 kills, her sixth double-digit kill match of the season.
  • Freshman outside hitter Julia Adams had a good day offensively, placing eight kills on 17 attacks to finish with a .353 hitting percentage, her best mark since the second match of the season against Lipscomb (.471).
  • Redshirt junior Ashley Waggle put up a team-best .455 hitting percentage, delivering five kills on 11 attempts.
  • Junior libero Berklie Baker led the team with 12 digs, she has now delivered double-digit digs six times in 2019 including five of her last six matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (Rice, 25-17): The Horned Frogs jumped out of the gates with a strong net presence from Manyang. The freshman put up two blocks in the first seven points to help TCU establish a 12-9 lead. The Owls turned things around with a 6-1 run fueled by their star Nicole Lennon. With the momentum in favor of Rice, the Owls closed out the set on top. Nalls led the team with three kills.

Set 2 (Rice, 25-18): Rice established a six-point lead early, 10-4, and battled to hold the Frogs at bay for the remainder of the set. TCU cut the lead to three points multiple times, but never closer as the Owls took the set by seven points.

Set 3 (Rice, 25-20): The Frogs came out with renewed energy after the set break. The TCU offense was clicking as the team was hitting .556 midway through the third (13-13). The breaking point came soon after as Rice went on a 5-1 scoring run to go ahead, 18-14. TCU fought until the end but it wasn't meant to be and Rice polished off its 11th win of the season.

UP NEXT:
TCU kicks off its Big 12 conference campaign with a trip to Norman, Okla. The Horned Frogs will open up conference play against Oklahoma on Wednesday, Sept. 25. First serve is set for 8 p.m. as TCU will be a part of the second game in the Big 12 doubleheader on ESPNU.

All this heat on Cumbie this morning, shouldn't TCU Volleyball be to a point where we beat programs like Rice and not be swept in three sets. What's their coach doing that ours is not? We are now 5-5 they are 11-1. The majority of our 5 wins if not all of them were at home in tournaments we hosted.
