GoFrogs: TCU Comes Up Just Short in Epic Battle with Sooners

FORT WORTH -- TCU volleyball left it all on the court in the fourth set as Oklahoma claimed a 3-1 victory Wednesday night inside The Rickel. The Horned Frogs gave it all they had but couldn't get the lucky bounces as they dropped the final home match of the 2019 season to Oklahoma: 26-24, 23-25, 17-25, 34-36.

"As always I want to thank our fans," head coach Jill Kramer said. "The community has really embraced our team and you could feel it. Hats off to OU. I thought they were just tougher than us at the end. We had some players really play well tonight. We're playing our best game offensively over the last five matches. This is the way we've wanted to play all year long. I was really proud of our performance tonight. Would have liked to see the ball bounce a different way at the end but I'm really proud of our team. If we keep doing that, great things are going to happen."

TCU NOTABLES:
  • 2,508 fans were in attendance tonight, the second largest crowd in program history and the largest in the Jill Kramer era.
  • The fourth set, 36-34, was the highest scoring set in program history in the 25-point set era and the highest scoring set overall since Sept. 30, 2006 (38-36 W vs. SDSU).
  • élan McCall and Katie Clark led the team with 16 kills each. It was the fourth 10+ kill match in the last five matches for McCall and the sixth such match in the last seven for Clark.
  • McCall led the team with 17 digs, including seven the fourth set. It was her third double-double of the season (17th of her career) and third in her last four matches played.
  • Over her last five matches, McCall is averaging 4.15 kills/set and 2.9 digs/set.
  • Clark finished with four blocks, extending her 3+ blocks streak to nine matches.
  • Since moving to the middle blocker position, Clark has delivered 2.88 kills/set, 1.09 blocks/set and 3.57 points/set on a team-best .324 hitting.
  • Clark got her 16 kills on .538 hitting, her season-best and career-best with greater than 10 attacks. It was the third time in her career to have hit over .500 in a match and the only instance she's done so with greater than 20 attempts (26).
  • Julia Adams delivered 14 kills, extending her double-digit kill streak to five matches. She is delivering 3.80 kills/set over her last five matches.
  • Adams also hit .345 tonight, her seventh .300+ hitting match of the season, third time to have done so with 25 or more attacks.
  • Afedo Manyang led the team in blocks for the team-leading ninth time this season, with six. It's her season-high in a Big 12 match, marking the second straight match she's set that personal accolade – five blocks in last match vs. TTU.
  • Manyang has now secured five or more blocks in four matches this season and two consecutively.
  • McKenzie Nichols finished with 49 assists and a career-best five kills. It was her seventh 40+ assist match and the sixth such performance in her last eight appearances.
  • The TCU offense finished with 65 kills, the second consecutive match with over 60 kills. TCU has five such matches this season, including four in its last five.
  • Oklahoma had held Big 12 opponents to just 12.42 kills/set in conference play, TCU delivered 16.25/set tonight. It was the most kills OU has surrendered in a four set match this season.
  • TCU hit .264 as a team tonight. The only teams to have hit for a higher clip against Oklahoma this season were Texas (twice) and Baylor (once).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 26-24): The TCU offense fed off the packed house in the opening set as McCall, Ashley Waggle and Adams each finished with at least four kills. The Horned Frogs moved the ball well, overcoming a 22-19 deficit to win seven of the final nine points and claim a one-set lead. Two kills from Waggle, a kill from Manyang and Adams as well as the seventh-career kill from libero Dani Dennison fueled the comeback. McCall would lead the team with five kills and seven digs in the opening set while Waggle would earn four on a perfect 1.000 hitting. TCU hit .368 as a team.

Set 2 (OU, 25-23): The TCU offense was dominated by Katie Clark in the second set, the sophomore tore through the middle of the normally dominant Oklahoma defense to the tune of six kills on .750 hitting. A 5-1 OU run would be the difference as the Sooners turned a 19-17 TCU advantage into a 22-20 deficit. The Horned Frogs battled to the last point but Oklahoma tied the match, 1-1.

Set 3 (OU, 25-17): A late run from the Sooners put them in front, 23-15 and would lead to an OU win. Clark led the team with four kills on 1.000 hitting but it wouldn't be enough to take down the visitors.

Set 4 (OU, 36-34): The longest set of the TCU 25-point era would see 17 ties and 11 lead changes before the Sooners eventually won, 36-34. The Horned Frogs fought off four match points thanks to three kills from Manyang and one from Adams. The freshman were crucial down the stretch as Manyang finished with three kills while Adams posted two when the set went past 25 points. Clark was instrumental with a kill and a solo block in the extra time. McCall did her part on the defensive end, posting seven digs as TCU was left with a bigger lineup upon running out of substitutes in the marathon set. McCall would lead the team in kills, along with Adams, as they each posted six in the final set. Clark and Manyang each finished with four as the Horned Frogs fought for every point but would wind up on the short end of an epic set.
