GoFrogs: Volleyball Advances with 3-2 Win Over Miami
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- TCU volleyball used a balanced offense, strong defense and a masterful performance from sophomore Katie Clark to advance past Miami (OH), 3-2, Thursday afternoon inside the Stroh Center. The Horned Frogs advance to the second round of the NIVC where they will play the winner of Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne and host, Bowling Green.

"We went a little more up and down than we would have liked but, in the end, we're all competitors and when it came time to really step up and compete, I thought we did a really good job of that," head coach Jill Kramer said. "Kenz (McKenzie Nichols) did a really good job especially down the stretch of managing our offensive play and giving our hitters some really good looks. We're excited to get back out here and have another opportunity to play tomorrow."

TCU NOTABLES:
  • Clark finished with 12 kills and a career-best 12 blocks for her first-career double-double.
  • Her 12 blocks tie a program record – also Regan McGuire (2015 & 2013) and Jennifer Sebastian (2000).
  • It was the most blocks in a single match of any Big 12 player this season, tied for the seventh most by an individual in a match this season.
  • TCU finished with 18.0 blocks as a team, tied for the eighth most in a single match in program history.
  • Junior middle blocker Sarah Swanson made a huge impact off the bench, hitting a season-best 11 kills on .562 hitting along with a season-high five blocks.
  • Redshirt-junior Ashley Waggle tied her career-high with four blocks.
  • Junior libero Dani Dennison set a season high with 25 digs, her second 20+ dig match of the season and 11th of her career.
  • Freshman setter McKenzie Nichols distributed the ball well throughout the match, finishing with 40 assists while tying her career-best with 15 digs. It was her team-leading eighth double-double of the season and fifth 40+ assist double-double.
  • Freshman outside hitter Julia Adams led the team in kills for the fifth time this season, finishing with 13 to go along with five rejections.
  • Sophomore élan McCall finished just one dig shy of her career-high, posting 21. It was her second 20+ dig match of the season. She added nine kills as well.
  • Junior Berklie Baker delivered 13 digs, her 11th double-digit dig match of the year.
  • Freshman Bella Swafford set a career-high with three aces while tying her season-best in digs (10).
  • As a team, TCU dug 91 balls, the most in a match this season and the most since Oct. 18, 2018 – 94 vs. WVU.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 27-25): A slow start forced the Horned Frogs to mount a comeback, down 8-14. A pair of kills from Adams along with termination by Waggle and McCall brought the Frogs within one with a solo block from Clark completing the 7-1 run, tying the score, 15-15. From there, the score would be tied eight more times before a McCall kill sealed the victory for TCU. She would lead the team, along with Adams with four kills each. Clark finished with three kills and three blocks, two solo. TCU put up five blocks in the opening frame. Holding Miami to just .130 hitting.

Set 2 (Miami, 25-23): The Frogs fell behind early again, trailing by as much as 13-5. But once again TCU came roaring back. Two kills and two blocks from Clark paired with two kills from Adams and a slew of Redhawk errors put the Horned Frogs on a 10-1 run to reclaim the lead, 15-14. Miami would manage a 6-1 run later in the set to go ahead, 23-20 and eventually take the set, tying the match, one set apiece.

Set 3 (TCU, 25-14): Fueled by the setback, TCU jumped all over Miami to open the third set, earning a 15-6 lead. With nine points in hand the Horned Frogs cruised to an 11-point set win, tied for the largest margin of victory this season, most since High Point. McCall and Clark led the team with three kills each. Dennison led the way with six digs while Clark and Waggle delivered two blocks.

Set 4 (Miami, 25-18): A 7-0 Redhawk run swung momentum into Miami's favor in the fourth set. The Redhawks found themselves on top, 20-14 late and nursed that to a seven-point victory, forcing a deciding fifth set. Adams led TCU with three kills.

Set 5 (TCU, 15-12): The outlook seemed uncertain as Miami stood atop the score line, 10-7 in the fifth. But two clutch kills from Swanson cut into the deficit before Clark's record-setting 12th block brought the lead to just one before Adams tied the score, 12-12, with a kill. Clark and Adams each would tack on one more kill each as TCU won the final five points of the match to win the set and the opening round match. Swanson led the team with three kills in the final set. Dennison led the way on the back row with five digs while Clark added on two more blocks to advance TCU into the second round.

Currently in action against Bowling Green where the Frogs just won G1 26-24. Somewhat surprising since our best player did not play in G1 apparently. I hope she’s not battling the injury that sidelined her early this season

TCU wins the match and moves on to the third round of the NIVC! McCall was dressed and standing with the other players at the end of the third set. Never took her jacket off. Have no idea why she didn't play.
