Ugen Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Two-time defending NCAA Champion Lorraine Ugen took her first step towards repeating Thursday night, placing second overall in the women's long jump to lead TCU on the opening day of the 2014 NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at John McDonnell Field.
"All-in-all, the individuals we thought would do well, did well for the most part today," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "The 100-meter guys ran solid today. They put themselves in good position to be able to do well and hopefully be able to punch their tickets to Eugene. We had some people struggle a little bit, but that's part of athletics. We just need to come back tomorrow and see if we can take the next step towards getting some more qualified for the final rounds of the NCAA meet."
Ugen, a five-time All-America honoree, soared 20 feet, 10 ¾ inches on her third attempt to claim runner-up accolades and punch her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will take place in Eugene, Ore., in two weeks.
"Lorraine is still struggling a little bit with her runway, but I am pleased with how she went about today and was able to advance to Eugene," said Anderson.
Other notables on the day included sophomore Ronnie Baker and freshman Kolby Listenbee who both advanced to the next round in the men's 100 meters. Baker, who ranked No. 16 in the West Region heading into this weekend, clocked the fourth-fastest preliminary time Thursday, crossing the finish line in 10.21 seconds to place second overall in heat No. 1 and advance to Friday's semifinal round. Listenbee wrapped-up preliminary action, placing second in heat No. 2 with a time of 10.31 seconds, which was the 10th-fastest time clocked in Fayetteville.
In the women's 400 meters, senior Briyanni Thomas recorded a time of 53.32 to place 16th overall and third in heat No. 6 to advance to the quarterfinals.
TCU will continue action tomorrow in Fayetteville. The Frogs will begin competition with the women's discus at 3:00 p.m. CT.
