FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU track and field team wrapped up competition at the TCU Invitational on Saturday, opening the outdoor season with eight wins.

After Fellan McGuigan’s win in the hammer throw and Ryan Camp’s win in the discus on Friday, the Horned Frogs added six more wins on Saturday. The men’s 4x400 relay, consisting of Jostyn Andrews, Darrion Flowers, Kevin McClanahan, and Derrick Mokaleng, opened with a solid 3:06.59 first-place mark. Individually, Mokaleng made his collegiate debut in the 200m and ran a personal-best 20.86 in a win.

Reigning Big 12 100m champion Jalen Miller opened the outdoor season with a win in the 100m, finishing in 10.39.

Fresh off earning All-America honors in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championship last weekend, Scotty Newton started his outdoor season with a 7.53 (24’ 8.5”) mark to win the long jump.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Lexi Aitken picked up the win with an 1:00.29 mark. Aitken reached the NCAA West Regional round last season.

In the men’s 400m, Ogwo and McClanahan finished second and third respectively with marks of 46.85 and 47.56.

The women’s 4X400m relay of Kennedy Crawford, Kayla Heard, Renee Payne, and Lexi Aitken finished with a second-place time of 3:42.26.

Men’s 4x100m relay of Miller, Ogwo, Flowers, and Lebogang Maloka debuted with a 39.57 mark and finished third.

In the women’s 100 hurdles, Brittney Trought, Yasmin Brooks, and Aitken finished third, fourth, and fifth with marks of 13.56, 13.72, and 13.75 respectively.

Distance runners Nicole Hicks and Evelyn Mandel opened the outdoor season with solid marks. Hicks finished third in the 3000m in 9:53.03, while Mandel ran 4:36.01 in the 1500m. Erin Barth set a new personal-best in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, finishing in 11:41.82.

“We had a good meet,” head coach Darryl Anderson said. “We always seem to run well at home. This meet had a mixed bag with a lot of good performances and a few okay ones, but overall I’m pleased with the way we performed. It was a good start to the outdoor season.”

The Horned Frogs return to action next weekend at the UTSA Invitational, scheduled for March 23-24.

20 years ago finishing third in the 4x100 would have been a shock, even in the nationals. But now we are better in field events...but not close to being a national championship contender like then when we were generally awful in field events.
Sigh.
