Track & Field Opens the Outdoor Season

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU track and field transitioned to the outdoor season on Saturday at the TCU Invitational. The Horned Frogs took full advantage of being home, winning several events on the day.

EVENT WINS
TCU took the top two spots in both the men's and women's 100m. In the men's 100m, Tarrick Brock and Tinotenda Matiyenga led the field with times of 10.40 and 10.43, while Jenea Spinks and Hope Glenn finished in 11.58 and 11.60 on the women's side.

Matiyenga, who qualified for the NCAA West Region meet in the 200m last year, won the men's 200 on Saturday with a personal-best time of 20.81.

TCU also had a pair of winners in two jump events. In the women's long jump, Chyna Ries won the event with a jump of 6.04m (19-9.75). Saturday's jump was Ries' best outdoor jump since coming to TCU. With only one attempt, two-time NCAA bronze medalist Chengetayi Mapaya won the men's triple jump with a jump of 15.99m (52-5.5).

Freshman Blake Hennesay made his outdoor collegiate debut with a win in the men's 400m, finishing in 53.51.

TCU's men's 4x400 relay wrapped up the meet with a win. Emmanuel Ogwo, Derrick Mokaleng, Hennesay, and Jostyn Andrews produced a first-place time of 3:09.70. Andrews added a third-place finish in the men's 400m earlier in the meet.

In his 2019 debut, senior Fellan McGuigan finished third in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 60.61m (198-10). Saturday was McGuigan's first meet since the 2018 NCAA West Region meet.

RELAYS
TCU's other three relays each recorded second-place times. The women's 4x100 relay group of Ries, Destiny Longmire, Spinks, and Teleda Williams finished second with at time of 45.38, faster than all of TCU's 4x100 times from last year.

Lebogang Maloka, Matiyenga, Darrion Flowers, and Brock finished second in the men's 4x100 relay with a time of 39.70, while Asiah Fields, Crawford, Kiana Banks, and Lexi Aitken finished in 3:42.94 in the women's 4x400 relay.

COACH'S THOUGHTS
"Anytime you can see the sun lately, I'm happy," head track and field coach Darryl Anderson said. "Weather-wise, this is probably the best day we've had all year in 2019 and I think our kids appreciated it. I thought we had some things go well, getting quite a few marks that are going to get us regionally qualified. From that standpoint, we're happy. We won a few races, so we're happy with that. Now we take the next week off and train. Hopefully we'll be training in some good Texas weather so we can get ready for Texas Relays."

UP NEXT
The Horned Frogs have a week off before they return to action at the Texas Relays, scheduled for March 27-30 in Austin.
