OMAHA, Neb. - UCLA starting pitcher Gerrit Cole kept the TCU Horned Frogs in check through six innings and the Bruins made an early 5-0 lead hold up, sending the Frogs into the loser's bracket with a 6-3 loss Monday night.
Taylor Featherston had the big hit for the Frogs with a three-run triple in the seventh to pull the Frogs within two, 5-3. Kyle Winkler (12-2) lasted just 2 2/3 innings in his first start at the College World Series. He surrendered five runs on six hits, walked three and struck out two. Paul Gerrish was solid in relief for the Frogs, limiting the Bruins to an unearned run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter and fanned five. Kaleb Merck finished the game for TCU, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He retired all five batters he faced.
The Bruins took advantage of a lead-off walk in the first inning to push across the game's first run. Blair Dunlap put UCLA up 1-0 with a one-out single through the right side. Winkler limited the damage as he picked off Dunlap at second base to end the inning.
Another lead-off batter reached in the second and for the second straight inning he came around to score. This time it was a two-out single by Beau Amaral that plated the run, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.
Two home runs in the bottom of the third ended Winkler's night. Cody Regis delivered a one-out, two-run blast to left field to stake UCLA to a 4-0 lead. Jeff Gelalich hit a two-out home run to right to extend the lead to 5-0.
Gerrish did a masterful job keeping the deficit at five and the Horned Frogs finally were able to string together some hits.
Jason Coats' record-breaking hit started a big rally for the Frogs in the top of the seventh inning as he tallied his 98th hit of the season. Matt Curry followed with a base hit to center. With two outs, Jantzen Witte dumped a single into left to load the bases. Featherston came up huge, battling Cole to a 3-2 count before coming up with a bases-clearing triple to left center to make it a 5-3 contest.
After being held in check through the middle frames, Amaral again came up big for the Bruins as he led off the seventh with a ground-rule double. A passed ball moved him to third and he scored on a Niko Gallego sacrifice fly.
TCU couldn't muster anymore offense and the Bruins held onto the three-run victory.
TCU falls to 52-13 on the season. The Frogs will return to the field Wednesday night at 6 p.m. as they will face Florida State in an elimination contest. The Seminoles defeated Florida by an 8-5 score Monday afternoon to eliminate the Gators. Wednesday's game will air live on ESPN2.
Game Notes:
* Jason Coats' single in the seventh inning gave him 98 on the season, a new school record. Coats broke the record of 97 held previously by Chad Huffman who tallied 97 in 2004.
* Kyle Winkler suffered just his third career loss Monday night. His record now stands at 19-3 over the last two seasons.
* Taylor Featherston tallied his seventh triple in the game.
* TCU struck out 13 times, just the 10th time this season the Horned Frogs have tallied double-digit strikeouts and the first since striking out 14 times at Utah on May 1.
* TCU fell to 16-6 when allowing an opponent to score first.
