Frogs Hold Off Jayhawks

FORT WORTH, Texas – With the TCU women's basketball team leading by just one with 16 seconds remaining, Jayde Woods came up with a critical steal off an inbounds pass and Amy Okonkwo hit four clutch free throws down the stretch to secure a 58-53 victory over Kansas Sunday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena.

Jordan Moore posted another terrific all-around effort, finishing with a game-high 22 points, 10 rebounds and a season-high six blocks.

Sunday's game marked her third consecutive 20-point contest and her second double-double of the week. She also tied Latricia Lovings for fifth on the all-time TCU rebounding list with 742 career boards.

Amy Okonkwo and Kianna Ray finished in double-figures in scoring as well with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

With the win over the Jayhawks (11-7, 1-6 Big 12), the Horned Frogs (14-5, 4-4) are now an impressive 12-1 at home this season.

The Rundown
After a hard-fought first quarter, TCU locked the Jayhawks down in the second frame, forcing a stretch of five turnovers in five minutes en route to taking a 35-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Kansas came back with a fury in the third quarter, however, ending the period on an 11-0 run to slash the TCU lead to a mere three points, 44-41, heading into the fourth.

The Frogs responded by getting the ball to Moore and she took over, scoring TCU's first eight points of the fourth quarter to push the lead up to nine at 52-43 with 5:32 remaining.

The Jayhawks weren't going away without a fight though, rallying back to within one with under a minute left in the game.

With the score in TCU's favor 54-53, Kansas had control of the ball and a chance to take its first lead of the game since the opening quarter, but Woods dashed those dreams by tracking down an inbounds pass with 12.4 seconds remaining. From there, four clutch free throws from Okonkwo secured the victory for the Horned Frogs.

Stat of the Day
22 - Jordan Moore's game-high 22 points marked her third consecutive game with more than 20. She is the first Horned Frog to accomplish that feat since A.J. Alix scored 20+ in four consecutive games, Feb. 5-15, 2017. Moore also recorded her second double-double in as many games with 10 rebounds. She is the last TCU player to do that, having recorded double-doubles at Kansas and against Texas Tech, Feb. 5 and Feb. 8, 2017, respectively.

Quote of the Day
TCU Head Coach Raegan Pebley
"I know our team was really focused defensively, but offensively we did not do as great of a job as we needed to with the 26 turnovers. That's uncharacteristic of us but that's uncharacteristic of Kansas' defense. I felt like the rebounding on their offensive end, a lot of balls hitting off our hands, loose balls. We did not have a great flow. We will take a look at some of the different reasons. What are the things that are in our control, and we need to be better than that. What does Kansas do well that we need to prepare for better. I'm really proud of our execution down the stretch, out of timeouts. Every win in the Big 12 is a good win, every single win. Finding a way to get that win today was big."

Up Next
The Horned Frogs will travel to Manhattan, Kansas, to face Kansas State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
