GoFrogs: TCU Wins Singles and Doubles Titles at ITA Regionals

FORT WORTH –
TCU men's tennis claimed both the singles and doubles titles at the 2021 ITA Texas Regional Championships this week in College Station. Juan Carlos Aguilar won the singles title while Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives earned the doubles championship. It was the first time since 2015 that TCU won both events at the tournament (Cam Norrie, singles, Norrie/Trevor Johnson, doubles).

Aguilar, a graduate transfer from Texas A&M, won six matches on his way to the singles crown, including wins over two Top 20 opponents. He defeated Baylor's Sven Lah in the final with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 final score. He becomes the first Horned Frog to win the fall regional singles title since Cameron Norrie in 2015. Aguilar bested five ranked opponents throughout the tournament, winning 12 of 15 sets played.

Maxted and Vives became the first freshmen duo in program history to win the doubles title at the Regional Championships, besting Texas' Cleeve Harper and Richard Ciamarra in the final: 1-6 6-4 [10-8].

Overall, the five Horned Frogs present at the tournament posted a 24-5 record across all matches. All five Frogs reached the round of 16 in singles play, with four in the quarterfinals, two in the semifinals and Aguilar winning the title. In doubles play, both of TCU's pairings reached the semifinals with Maxted/Vives earning the trophy.

I hadn't seen all those results - of them, I think the Aguilar W over Baylor's Boitan (ranked preseason 9th) is the most impressive. Beating Braswell in the semis is also a good sign.
