GoFrogs: TCU Sweeps BGSU to Advance to NIVC Quarterfinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- TCU volleyball was firing on all cylinders Friday night inside the Stroh Center as the Horned Frogs silenced the Bowling Green Falcons, 3-0: 26-24, 25-21, 25-13. TCU. Has won the Bowling Green regional and advances to the NIVC quarterfinals, scheduled for next week, Dec. 10-12.

TCU NOTABLES:
  • McKenzie Nichols set a career high with 14.0 assists/set tonight - 42 total assists.
  • 42 assists in three sets ties Nichols for third most in the Big 12 this season.
  • It was the most assists in a three-set win since August 24, 2018 – Dilfer, 43.
  • Freshman Audrey Nalls led the team with 13 kills, 12 in the final two sets. It was her 10th double-digit kill match of the season.
  • She also registered 11 digs to complete her third-career double-double.
  • Sophomore Katie Clark put up eight blocks, setting a career-high with 2.67 blocks/set. She finishes the weekend with 23 kills and 20 blocks in eight sets of work (2.87 kills/set and 2.5 blocks/set).
  • Clark and Ashley Waggle led the team in efficiency, each finishing at .429 – Clark on 11 kills and Waggle on seven.
  • Waggle set a career-high at the net, where she posted five blocks. She tied her career high last night against Miami (OH), giving her nine blocks this postseason.
  • Junior Dani Dennison had another phenomenal match in the back row. She managed 19 digs in just three sets (6.33 digs/set). She finishes the weekend with 44 digs on a staggering 5.5 digs/set clip.
  • Dennison has now earned 10+ digs in nine of her last 10 matches.
  • Junior Berklie Baker was also strong in the back, where she delivered 10 digs, her 11th double-digit dig performance this season.
  • Junior Sarah Swanson delivered seven kills and three blocks in the middle. She finishes the weekend with 2.25 kills/set (18 kills).
  • Freshman Julia Adams also finished with seven kills. She has earned 20 kills this postseason (2.5 kills/set).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 26-24): Both teams exchanged short runs to open the match, leading to a 14-14 deadlock. Kills from Nalls, Clark and an ace from Bella Swafford put the Horned Frogs in front, 17-14 where they would remain until a BGSU run tied the match once more, 19-19. The Falcons took the lead, 23-21, before Waggle and Clark each tallied kills and combined for a block to put TCU in front, 25-24. A Swafford ace, her second of the set, would seal the win for TCU. Clark and Swanson led the team with four kills each, Clark tallied three blocks and Baker paced the defense with five digs.

Set 2 (TCU 25-21): Two kills and a block from Waggle vaulted TCU to an 8-4 advantage as play resumed. BGSU managed to take the lead, 14-15, but three kills and an ace from Nalls, along with a pair of kills from Clark put the Horned Frogs in front for good, 21-17. Adams would add a kill and a block to cement the win. TCU was in control of the match. Nalls led the team with five kills, Clark, Waggle and Swanson each put up a pair of blocks and Dennison racked up eight digs. TCU had found a rhythm on offense and rode it to .238 hitting as a team.

Set 3 (TCU, 25-13): The rhythm found late in the second carried directly into the third, where TCU flexed its muscles on the hosts. Bowling Green fought to keep things close early, getting within two points, 12-10. But TCU would go on a 10-1 run thanks to four kills from Nalls, two from Clark and a pair of back-to-back aces from Baker. Once in front by 11, the Horned Frogs polished off the win with another kill from Nalls to advance past BGSU into the quarterfinals. Nalls would finish with seven kills in the third. Clark led the way with three blocks, Dennison would tally seven digs. The TCU offense hit .436 in the set while holding BGSU to just .031 hitting.
