Postgame Notes

FORT WORTH – Despite an early deficit, TCU battled back and pulled away late to claim a 35-21 victory over Colorado on Saturday night at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

TCU (4-1) was led by Josh Hoover, who passed for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Joseph Manjack IV led the team receiving the ball, gaining 65 yards and finding the end zone once.

Jamel Johnson and Namdi Obiazor led the Frogs in tackling, each earning 10. The pair also tallied an interception, joining Bud Clark in that statistical category.

Colorado (2-4) opened up a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, but the Frogs were able to generate a response to close the first half on a high note. The first touchdown came with 2:38 remaining in the second quarter as Hoover scored on a quarterback sneak to cut the lead to one score.

Following an interception by Clark, Hoover would find Eric McAlister on a fade route in the end zone to tie the game with just over 90 seconds remaining until halftime.

The Buffaloes were able to generate a drive to close the half, but Obiazor picked CU off on a deflected pass at the goal line to stop any potential score by the visiting team.

The two defenses shut down the offenses in the third quarter, but within the first minute of the fourth Hoover found Lafayette Kaiuway in the end zone on fourth down to give the Frogs a seven-point lead.

After a penalty forced a TCU punt, the Colorado returner muffed the punt and TCU recovered to give the offense an opportunity deep in Buffaloes territory. The offense took advantage, with Hoover finding Manjack for a score to give the Frogs a 28-21 lead.

Facing a fourth down with under 30 seconds remaining in the game, Hoover found a wide-open McAllister to cement a double-digit victory for TCU.

It was their longest streak since at least 1996 … Josh Hoover threw for four or more touchdowns for the seventh time of his career, the most of any active QB.

It was ugly, but wow, what an exciting team to watch. Never a dull moment.
- TCU has some great athletes in the speed/skills slots on both sides of the ball,
and I guess we all now know how important Barnes/McAlister are to this team.
- Both the DL and OL could be our Achilles Heel.
The DL gets ok pressure, but more than half the sacks/pressures are because TCU has great LBs & Safeties operating in blitz packages. They are the secret sauce to this D. Unfortunately, these blitzes can also cause some gashing rush plays and over the top pass receptions. However the blitz packages are still very successful and create enough havoc to outweigh the big running/passing plays that occur somewhat frequently. Luckily those plays mostly happen between the 20s.
The OL is really bad, especially at the tackles. As bad as Hughes is, there is a huge drop off in depth behind him. Hughes getting injured really hurts. Please get well soon.
- Hoover’s legs continue to evolve. What he doesn’t have in speed/agility, he makes up for with pure guts. The kid is simply amazing at times, and always exciting.

All in all I like the grit of this team. It has many flaws, but most of the time it has found a way to win, and I believe that coaching has a great deal to do with that.

Going forward, the recruiting must improve and more money must be targeted on the front lines.
Go Frogs!

Good overall synopsis... Just the threat of Josh running can really help. And yes - we either need some young guys on the DL grow up or we need to go buy some....

That said, I like the development of some of the young DL's. For instance, RFR Tristan Johnson is making some plays and getting a ton of playing time.
