TCU Football Cited for Its Graduation Rate

At least 90 percent of the 2005 freshman class has graduated

WACO, Texas -- The TCU football program's high graduation rate has been recognized for a fifth straight season by the American Football Coaches Association.

TCU is one of just 18 schools to achieve a graduation rate of 90 percent or better for its football student-athletes who entered as freshmen in 2005.

All 20 of TCU's seniors this season already have their degree in hand or are scheduled to graduate next week or in May. The Horned Frogs have 10 seniors, including All-Big 12 selections Blaize Foltz and James Fry, playing as graduate students this fall.

The GSR is based on a six-year graduation window for student-athletes and was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for mid-year enrollees.

Under GSR calculation, institutions are not penalized for outgoing transfer students who leave in good academic standing. These outgoing transfers are passed to the receiving institution's GSR cohort. By counting incoming transfer students and mid-year enrollees, the GSR increases the total number of student-athletes tracked for graduation by more than 37 percent.

Muck's angle would be that TCU is failing 10 percent or less of its football players by not making sure they complete their degrees on time.

Indeed! When I told people that of the Rose Bowl team, all of the Seniors either had their Degrees, or had a Masters to go along with it, the looks I got were priceless. "Masters?!?"

This is a monstrously positive story that is almost totally ignored by everyone. To report on such a thing would be to make very nearly all other programs look bad, and we can't be making UT and A&M look like they are inferior outfits. No sirree...

It is said that 'Character is measured by what you do when nobody else is looking at you.' By that metric, I proudly rate TCU as doing it with character and integrity in a landscape that seems to care little for either.

Are you talking about the factory at OU? They are dead last ( or tied with Central Michigan, I believe) in graduating football players. In a perfect world, ratings would include both play on the field and work in the classroom. Go Frogs, you are indeed shining in both.
