Hughes Receives Dan Rogers Most Valuable Player Award for the second straight season

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU football program held its annual team banquet Saturday with over 800 people in attendance in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The night honored the Horned Frogs' 2009 seniors, who won 42 games to become the winningest class in TCU history.

Jerry Hughes became the first defensive player in TCU history and just the fifth overall to be named a two-time recipient of TCU's Dan Rogers Most Valuable Player award. He also received the honor in 2008.

Previous two-time recipients were quarterback Jeff Ballard (2005-06), tailback LaDainian Tomlinson (1999-00), offensive lineman W.C. Nix (1985-86) and wide receiver Mike Renfro (1976-77).

Hughes was just the second two-time consensus All-American at TCU. He led the Frogs in tackles for loss (16.5) and sacks (11.5) while placing fifth with a career-high 58 stops.

Hughes won the Ted Hendricks Award and Lott Trophy while being a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy.

Hughes and linebacker Daryl Washington shared Defensive MVP honors. Washington was named to four All-America teams and was a semifinalist for the Dick Butkus Award, recognizing the nation's top linebacker. His team-high 109 tackles were the most by a Frog since 2004. Dave Campbell's Texas Football tabbed Washington as the Best Linebacker in the State of Texas for the 2009 campaign.

Quarterback Andy Dalton received Offensive MVP honors. Dalton was the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year and one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award, recognizing the nation's top quarterback. He ranked eighth in the nation in passing efficiency with a 151.8 rating. Dalton set a single-season TCU record with 2,756 yards passing, while his 61.6 completion percentage and 23 touchdown passes placed second.

Jeremy Kerley was selected as TCU's Special Teams Most Valuable Player as well as being the Special Teams Points Leader. Kerley, the Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year, returned two punts for touchdowns as he led the MWC in both punt return average (14.4 yards) and kickoff return average (26.6 yards).

As part of the evening's festivities, TCU's Gary Patterson was formally presented the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year Award. It was one of nine national coaching honors received by Patterson last season.

He was one special player for the team!

Don't think he worked out for the NFL scouts though...

He is a tough player.
