GoFrogs: TCU Football: 8 Horned Frogs Receive All-Big 12 Honors

Led by cornerback Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson and wide receiver Quentin Johnston being first-team selections by the conference head coaches, eight Horned Frogs received All-Big 12 recognition this season.

Center Steve Avila, return specialist Derius Davis and defensive end Ochaun Mathis were second-team picks, while wide receiver Taye Barber and defensive end Dylan Horton were honorable mention. Additionally, offensive tackle Obinna Eze was Honorable-Mention Offensive Newcomer of the Year.

Hodges-Tomlinson is First-Team All-Big 12 for the second straight season. Despite teams consistently throwing away from him, he had a team-best seven pass breakups and two forced fumbles while tying for the TCU lead with two interceptions, including one returned 29 yards for a touchdown at Texas Tech. He was sixth on the team with 43 tackles, more than his first two seasons combined (34). Exclusively a cornerback in his TCU career, Hodges-Tomlinson moved to safety midway through the Texas game when TCU became thin at the position. He responded with a career-high nine tackles while also forcing a fumble.

Johnston led TCU with 634 yards receiving, six touchdowns and 19.2 yards per reception, which places second in the Big 12. His 33 catches on the season were second on TCU to Davis (36). Johnston topped 100 yards receiving in three of his last five games. He had career-best totals of seven receptions for 185 yards and three touchdowns at Oklahoma. The 185 yards receiving were the most by a Horned Frog since 2016, and he was the first TCU player with three touchdown catches in a game since 2015.

Avila started 11 of 12 games and anchored an offensive line that paved the way for TCU to rank among the Big 12 leaders in total offense at 435.8 yards per game. Davis was second in the Big 12 and 10th nationally in kickoff return average at 29.6 yards. He returned the game’s opening kickoff against West Virginia 100 yards for a touchdown. It was his fourth career special teams score. His also averaged 10.2 yards on punt returns. Mathis tied Horton for the team lead in sacks with 4.0 while placing second with 7.0 tackles for loss. He was third on TCU with three pass breakups and fifth with 45 tackles. Mathis recorded two sacks as part of three tackles for loss and seven stops at Oklahoma.

Barber was third on TCU with 30 receptions for 499 yards and two touchdowns. He had a season-best six catches for 78 yards in the 30-28 win over Baylor. Horton posted a team-best 9.0 tackles for loss while tying for fourth on TCU with 52 stops. Eze started all 12 games at left tackle.

QJ had to earn that honor solely on OU game performance,(maybe Baylor also). Great talent but Frogs QB's not good at getting ball to him most of the season. Hoping Dykes can figure out a way to get the most pout of him next season.

Thought I read here that THT had a bad year.
I don’t think THT had a bad year. He certainly took a step down from his All American year year but I think that is directly related to TCU’s woeful pass rush this year…which brings me back to my puzzlement at Mathis as second team all Big 12. Considering reasonable expectations of his performance this year. he was easily the most disappointing player on the defense, imo.

I think Tomlinson had a really rough game against OSU and that's still fresh in everyone's mind since it was so recent.

I agree with PoP that he had a little drop off from 2020 but was also a victim of a really bad front that couldn't rush the passer and couldn't stop the run.
