TCU Falls To Stephen F. Austin, 6-3

Hendrix hits second home run of the season

Final Stats

FORT WORTH - The TCU Horned Frogs surrendered a six-run fifth inning to Stephen F. Austin and never recovered in a 6-3 loss Wednesday night. Paul Hendrix hit his second home run of the season.

The Frogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as they took advantage of a Lumberjack miscue with one out in the frame. Jantzen Witte reached on the error and moved to second on a base hit by Kevin Cron. A single through the right side off the bat of Derek Odell put the Frogs up 1-0 as Witte slid safely into home just ahead of the tag.

Stephen F. Austin responded in a big way as it scored six times on six hits to take a commanding 6-1 lead. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Michael Ruiz lined a single to the outfield. A misplay in the outfield allowed both runners to score for a 2-1 Lumberjack lead.

The lead continued to grow as the SFA picked up two more runs before the second out was recorded. Two more runs scored with two outs before Kyle Bacak threw out Mackenzie Handel trying to steal second for the final out of the inning.

TCU cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning as it closed the gap to three runs. With one out, Cody Jones was plunked on the foot to put one on. A batter later, Hendrix launched his second home run of the season over the right field wall to make it a 6-3 contest.

The Frog bullpen took over with two outs in the fifth and held the Lumberjacks in check the rest of the way. Trevor Seidenberger allowed two hits and struck out four in his two innings of work.

Justin Scharf came on in the seventh to strand a base runner. In the eighth, he gave up a hit only to see the runner caught trying to steal. A two-out walk proved harmless as well as Scharf got an inning-ending ground ball. Trey Teakell pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to keep the Frogs within striking distance.

TCU's had a chance to possibly tie the game in the ninth. Keaton Jones led off the inning with a base hit, but was erased on a double play ball. A two-out error allowed Kevin Daniels to reach base safely. Cody Jones followed with a bunt single, but SFA's closer did his job and got out of the jam unscathed.

Stefan Crichton (2-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. He was cruising through four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five before trouble struck in the fifth.

The Horned Frogs fall to 14-19 overall. TCU returns to conference play this weekend when it hosts Oklahoma State. Game time for Friday's series opener is set for 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports.
