FORT WORTH—Senior forward Adrick McKinney scored a career high 18 points as TCU opened its week-long homestand with a 67-54 loss to No. 16 Kansas State on Wednesday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

The setback dropped TCU’s season record to 9-8 overall, including 0-4 in Big 12 play. KSU improved to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12 with its seventh consecutive win.

McKinney came alive for the Frogs in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to offset a K-State squad that showed up to the DMC in sharp form Wednesday. KSU connected on 48.2 percent of its field goals, including 9-of-17 from 3-point range, and turned 12 TCU turnovers into 20 points. The Wildcats built a 13-point lead at the half and never looked back.

McKinney went 6-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-9 at the charity stripe on the way to his career performance. He totaled 12 of his scoring figure in the second half and added a team-high nine rebounds for the game, his sixth contest in the last nine with at least nine boards.

Sophomore guard Kyan Anderson added 10 points for TCU, while sophomore forward Devonta Abron had nine and six boards.

Guard Rodney McGruder showed why he represented Kansas State on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, scoring a game-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He made a trio of 3-pointers, including two in the first period to help KSU build its big halftime lead. Guard Martavious Irving and forwards Adrian Diaz and Jordan Henriquez scored eight points each for the Wildcats, with Henriquez pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds.

TCU got off to a strong start, running out to an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes thanks to a pair of early 3’s by Anderson and freshman guard Charles Hill Jr. The Wildcats moved in front for the first time midway through the half with an 8-0 spurt finished off by a trey by guard Will Spradling.

K-State continued to attack, moving on top by 10 points, 24-14, with just over five minutes left in the opening period following another long run, this one 9-0. Diaz started it up with back-to-back buckets, while guard Angel Rodriguez added KSU’s third trey of the half. The Wildcats closed the half outscoring TCU by a 12-4 count in the final three-and-a-half minutes. Irving scored on a layup at the buzzer to send the Frogs to the locker room trailing by a 38-25 count.

The second half started just as the first had ended, as KSU drilled its first three attempts from beyond the arc in just three minutes to move in front by 18 points, 47-29. The Wildcats added a 9-2 spurt midway through the half to push the advantage over 20 points. TCU held KSU without a basketball for the final 6:19 while cutting the final deficit back to only 13 points.

TCU concludes a two-game homestand Saturday at 12:45 p.m., when the squad plays host to Iowa State at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Big 12 Network, which is available on TXA-21 in the DFW Metroplex, will televise the game live.

POSTGAME QUOTES
#16/18 Kansas State 67, TCU 54
Fort Worth, Texas (Daniel-Meyer Coliseum)
Jan. 16, 2013
Attendance: 4,872

TCU HEAD COACH Trent Johnson
Opening Statement:
"That is a very experienced and well coached team, very worthy of their ranking. I thought we played probably as well as we could play for about the first three or four minutes, like most good teams that are matured, skilled, and understand their roles. We had a couple breakdowns defensively and we had a couple of breakdowns offensively and they make you pay. The positives were we had some guys that went back into the game and continued to fight and continued to try to compete. We had a couple of guys who were letting their offense dictate how hard they played or how aggressive they were going to be, which is a problem."

On the future of TCU basketball:
"I'm not going to put a time on it this year, but that (Kansas State) team reminds me of all my good teams that I have had. That is how the game is supposed to be played. I have a lot of respect for Bruce (Weber). We go back away, and he is really good. I have a lot of respect for (former KSU head coach) Frank Martin. That's what the people here at TCU are going to see sooner than later."

What the message was to the team going into the huddle in the first half:
"I don't know if K-State woke up. That is basketball. We hit some shots that we hadn't been hitting. Nate hits a 3, Kyan hits a jump shot ... again, they never lost poise. I thought that for us to have a chance to be in this thing down the stretch, we were going to have to be within striking distance at the 10-minute mark in the second half. When they got that separation, you could see they cut us off at the one end defensively. They are skilled. They are strong. We were going to have to be in a situation at the 10-minute mark, down 2 or 3, for us to have a chance down the stretch. It wasn't what we didn't do, it was what they did."

TCU SENIOR FORWARD Adrick McKinney
On tonight's performance:
"(Kansas State) is a good team, and against good teams you can't stop on plays. They are going to make you pay (when that happens), and they made us pay tonight."

On his comfort level on the court with teammate Devonta Abron:
"If he is down. I try to pick him up. If I'm down, he tries to pick me up. We go at each other all the time at practice. We have to have the mentality to be tougher."

Coach Johnson's message in timeouts and halftime:
"Just to keep fighting, keep fighting because like in the Baylor game, we see where we could be. We just have to keep fighting. When we played against Baylor, we saw what kind of team we can be if we just keep `D'-ing up and keep fighting. But, like I said, we have breakdowns, and we can't do that against good teams."

On being a senior:
"The message in the locker room right now is we have a lot of people down, so we can't afford to not fight. If we don't fight, we can't win. Coach is telling us everyday in practice to keep going, even if you are tired. He says you just have to push it. I can't come back after this season, so I have to push myself and the rest of the team to keep fighting."

KSU HEAD COACH BRUCE WEBER
Opening statement:
"Well after the slow start, which we expect in the middle of some big games, you come here and have the crowd and energy that's in the building. I kept talking since West Virginia that this game is just as important as every other one. You have to be ready to play. We came out a little lethargic our bench did a great job. Our senior did a great job in leading us and giving us the energy we need. Rodney (McGruder) gets going, Tay (Martavious Irving) did a great job defensively and then Jo (Jordan Henriquez) really gets it going inside for us. A good win. Now we get to go home and play Oklahoma who probably has a higher RPI than us. You get Lon Kruger coming back and it's a big game for us. We have to worry about that one game at a time. I know there's another game next Tuesday but Oklahoma is the one we have to worry about now. "

On the 8-2 start to the game:
"They're a capable team. Trent is under manned a little bit; he's a great coach and a great person. He's trying to rebuild it. I had the great fortune of having some veterans. He has a few guys but he will do a good job here. The thing we talk about is being solid and ready to ply. We had a real good stretch led by Martavious. He had a 5 count, a 10 count and he got some deflections. He seemed to be everywhere. And then JO got us on the boards and Rodney started making shots. We had a good run but never could get it. We hope we keep going, but to Trent's credit, his guys fought and made us fight right until that last media time out. "

On TCU running the shot clock out:
"We have done two different things. We've done the zone press and in this case we knew they didn't have much depth and we wanted to wear them out. When you talk about what the change is at the ten-minute mark in the half, it's that they got tired. We had good movement in our offense; they were chasing us. We were really making them work every possession to get the ball up the court. Their situation was really our chance to take advantage of that and their lack of depth probably. "

KSU SENIOR GUARD MARTAVIOUS IRVING
On after settling down on defense:
"Basically, we started off real slow and Coach called that first time out. He got into us and really got us going. We came out taking it a little lightly. Once Coach got in our ear we started playing better. "

On the mindset for the game:
"The past few days, Coach has been on me and Angelo and how we've been playing defense recently. We gave up a lot of scoring from the guards at West Virginia so I took it personally. I wanted to come out and succeed this game."

On his favorite play:
"The pick and roll and pass to JO when he dunked it. The ten-second violation was pretty fun and good. But now Coach is going to want me to that every time."

KSU JUNIOR FORWARD JORDAN HENRIQUEZ
On his favorite play:
"My favorite play definitely was when Martavious threw me the pass from the top of the key and I put it in the basket. "

On the game change with JO and Adrian both in:
"It's the best when you come out and bring energy off the bench. We fed into it and we were on a roll. When we're on a roll we're all we've got. "

On the KSU's versatility:
"I like how this team is made. We recognized that from the summer time; as soon as we started practicing, as soon as we started working out. We have a lot of different weapons that we can execute a lot of different ways. Everybody feeds into it. AS long as everyone is in tune we're good."

KSU SENIOR GUARD RODNEY MCGRUDER
On coming in ready to play:
"We came in thinking they're going to give us their all. We're a top-25 team and coming to the opponent's house. We knew they were going to give it their all. They took us down to the last 30 seconds. But we were ready for the fight."

On the style of offense:
"My teammates really help me and give me great space to get open. I'm able to make shots. It's a lot of fun. There's a lot of moving and screening. There are no real set plays."

On different players stepping up:
"Everybody plays well. We have a lot of threats. We have a lot of depth. Coach tries to make that key. That's what we're trying to do. We don't really rely on one guy."

On accountability:
"It helps people. You go in there and do whatever it takes to stay in the game. I want to stay in the game to help the team to victory. You see that in my teammates. Coach has to stick with those guys."
