GoFrogs: TCU Closes Out First Half of Big 12 Play with 65-61 Win Over K-State
FORT WORTH – Junior Lauren Heard posted her third career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and senior Ella Hellessey scored a season-high eight points, on the way to helping lead the TCU Horned Frogs to a 65-61 Big 12 win over the Kansas State Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Ed & Rae Schollmaier Arena.

TCU pushed its record to 16-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference standings, while K-State dropped to 9-10 on the year and 3-5 in Big 12 play.

THE RUNDOWN
Despite a slow start and an 11-9 deficit following the first quarter, TCU finally got things going in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 19-7 to take a 28-18 lead into the halftime break.

TCU would use a 13-0 run and keep K-State off the scoreboard for a total of 8:41 in the second quarter. Hellessey drained back-to-back three-pointers, with her second shot from downtown going in as time expired in the frame, which gave the Horned Frogs the 10-point advantage.

K-State opened the third quarter with a 12-1 run and led 30-29 with 7:39 on the clock, but TCU countered with a 9-0 run and would go onto outscore the Wildcats 16-8 over the final seven minutes to take a 45-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats did not go away quietly though, registering a 10-4 run to pull within a point (49-48) and later taking a three-point lead, up 54-51, following a three-point play from Peyton Williams.

Kianna Ray dra ined a three-pointer at the other end to give TCU back the lead, but a few possessions later, K-State took a 59-56 lead with a three-pointer from Christianna Carr at the 2:02 mark.

Jayde Woods notched double-digits though with a three-pointer at the other end and TCU would go onto outscore the Wildcats 9-2 down the stretch.

K-State had regained the lead, up 61-61 with a pair of free throws, but Hellessey knocked down a jumper in the paint to tie the game and Heard scored the final four points for the Frogs.

QUOTEABLE
"I think we are so locked into the game, either playing or being that extra player on the bench," said Hellessey. "Our sideline – the knot – is so locked in that when you do get called to go into the game, your contributions on the bench just makes you even more ready to go when you come into the game."

UP NEXT
TCU will have a break in mid-week game action and will be back on the court next Saturday, Feb. 8, taking on the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan. Tip-off between the Horned Frogs and Jayhawks is set for 5 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.
