GoFrogs: TCU Advances to Fourth Straight ITA Indoor National Championships Semifinal
WACO, Texas – TCU is one win away from playing for a fourth straight ITA Indoor National Championship.
The top-seeded Horned Frogs outlasted No. 9 San Diego, 4-2, in a quarterfinal dual on Saturday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
The doubles point was decided in a battle between the nation's top two tandems. Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives, the ITA No. 2 doubles pair, pitched a 6-3 defeat of No. 1 Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen and staked TCU to a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros, though, swept the first and fourth positions in singles and claimed five second sets. Vives evened the action via a 6-1, 7-6 (7) takedown of No. 34 Savriyan Danilov on court two.
The Spaniard's victory firmly swung the momentum in TCU's favor. Maxted and Albert Pedrico secured third set break points in their respective matches on three and six during Vives' tiebreaker. The ninth-ranked Maxted hung a 6-1 final frame on Iiro Vasa to put TCU within a point of victory.
Pedrico, a freshman from Leida, Spain, earned the first match-clincher of his career. He rallied from a set down vs. Neo Neidner, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
TCU (8-1) draws No. 11 Stanford in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The match will take place at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex on the campus of SMU.
The Frogs blanked the Cardinal, 7-0, on Jan. 17 on the same courts their Indoor Nationals semifinal will be contested on. Stanford knocked off No. 6 Columbia in Friday's opening round and swept 21st-ranked UCF on Saturday. TCU is the lone team that has defeated the Cardinal (7-1) thus far in 2024-25.
Should the Horned Frogs win, they face either No. 2 Wake Forest or No. 3 Texas in the championship match at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Dallas.
TCU improved to 20-9 all time at Indoor Nationals. The Horned Frogs have won 13 of their last 14 matches at the sport's flagship indoor event.
Saturday's win also boosted the Frogs' overall indoor record over the last four seasons to 41-3.
Doubles Rundown
TCU dictated the doubles point from start to finish, surrendering just two service games across three courts.
Jack Pinnington and Cooper Woestendick got on the board first, coasting to a 6-3 decision vs. Danilov and Vasa on court two.
Maxted and Vives clinched the doubles point for the second time in 2025.
The victory eliminates any debate as to who the nation's top doubles team is. Maxted and Vives' triumph over Tarvet and Klaassen, who claimed the ITA All-American Championships title in September, was their 15th straight win as partners. In addition to winning the NCAA Doubles Championship, Maxted and Vives have pitched a 12-0 record vs. ranked pairs and are now 7-0 opposite top 10 teams.
Pinnington and Woestendick boosted their shared record to 3-2.
Pedrico and Duncan Chan were level at five games all vs. Adrien Berrut and Nikhil Niranjan at the time of the clinch.
TCU improved to 8-1 in doubles action this season. The Frogs have claimed 13 of their last 14 possible doubles points dating back to their NCAA Championship run in May. TCU is now 28-4 in doubles play on the indoor courts since 2023.
