GoFrogs: Springer Wins Big 12 Championship

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – Senior Hayden Springer won the Big 12 Men's Golf Championship Sunday at The Greenbrier in West Virginia and helped TCU to a second place finish as a team, its best ever in the conference.

Springer began the day tied with Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland, the No. 3 ranked collegian and the low amateur in the 2019 Masters. The two battled through 18 holes under sunny skies and a steady wind at Old White TPC. Through it all, Springer never trailed in what the Trophy Ranch, Texas native said he treated like match play.

Springer held a three-stroke lead through 12 holes. However, Hovland made a birdie on the par 4 on No. 14 hole while Springer made bogey on No. 13 and No. 15 to even the score at 7-under with three holes to play. Springer retook the lead after Hovland bogeyed No. 16. Both Hovland and Springer made long putts for birdie on No. 17 as Springer maintained his one-stroke advantage.

Springer's tee shot on the par 3 No. 18 hole landed five yards from the hole as he two-putted for the championship to finish 8-under 202. Hovland finished as the runner-up at 7-under 203. It was TCU's first conference champion since Julien Brun won the Big 12 in 2014.

"I come in to every tournament expecting to win," said Springer when asked if he was surprised he won. "But you don't win every tournament."

Senior David Ravetto joined Springer on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team after finishing tied for third place at 6-under 204. It was Ravetto's third top 10 finish in his last four tournaments.

As a team, TCU finished 2-under 838, 11 strokes behind No. 1 Oklahoma State (-13). The Frogs defeated No. 7 Oklahoma (+2), No. 6 Texas (+2), No. 10 Texas Tech (+4) and No. 25 Baylor (+6).

"It's great to be a part of the best finish ever for TCU," said Springer. "That's what matters, to try to finish as high as we can as a team. Now we have regionals to try and get to nationals."

The Horned Frogs will know where they will go to make their 30th consecutive regional appearance on Wednesday with the selection show televised on Golf Channel at 8 p.m. CT.

Springer Will Return to The Greenbrier
By winning the Big 12 at The Greenbrier, Springer earned an exemption to play at annual PGA Tour stop, A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. The event is held Sept. 9-15.

"I can't really describe it," Springer said. "It's been my dream to play on the PGA Tour so I kind of get to make that true for one week."
