GoFrogs: Shepherd’s Blast Completes TCU’s Comeback
FORT WORTH – TCU rallied from a four-run deficit to steal a 5-4 victory over Cal in the series opener Friday night at Lupton Stadium. Conner Shepherd hit a go-ahead home run with one out in the eighth to complete the comeback.

The Rundown
Cal struck for a quartet runs in the second to open the scoring. The big blow in the inning was a two-out, two-run single from Darren Baker that pushed the score to 4-0. Gene Wood limited the damage, throwing out Baker trying to stretch a hit into a double to end the frame.

TCU's comeback started in a wild fifth inning that saw nine men come to the plate and 58 total pitches. Shepherd opened the inning with a base hit and moved to third on a Zach Humphreys double. Phillip Sikes drove in the first run of the game after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Porter Brown worked a 14-pitch to make it 4-2. Tommy Sacco pulled the Frogs within one with a groundout.

The Frogs evened the game at four in the seventh inning. Sacco singled with one out. A passed ball and a wild pitch had him standing on third with one out. Austin Henry delivered with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at four.

Shepherd's one out blast to right center in the gave the Frogs their first lead of the night.

Johnny Ray started for the Frogs, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits. He walked three and struck out six. Haylen Green turned in 2 2/3 solid innings of relief, surrendering two hits and fanning three. Marcelo Perez (1-0) retired the only batter he faced to pick up the win. Harrison Beethe pitched around a one-out base hit in the ninth to collect his first career save.

TCU saw 58 pitches combined from three different Cal pitchers in the fifth inning. The Horned Frogs cut the deficit to one with three runs in the frame. Porter Brown highlighted the inning with a 14-pitch walk.

• TCU is 8-1 to start a season for the third time under the guidance of head coach Jim Schlossnagle.
• TCU rallied from its biggest deficit faced this season (4) to earn the victory
• TCU homered in a game for the fifth time this season.

Zach Humphreys collected his second multi-hit game of the year and the 27th of his career.
Gray Rodgers notched his fifth career multi-hit game.
Gray Rodgers, Porter Brown and Hunter Wolfe have reached base safely in all nine games.

Next Up:
With the victory, TCU improved to 8-1 on the season. The Horned Frogs and the Bears will face off in Game 2 of the series on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
