GoFrogs: Nuñez Clinches Upset of Texas A&M

Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – Senior Guillermo Nuñez led the No. 11 TCU men’s tennis team to its fourth straight win over a ranked opponent and fifth straight overall victory by clinching the doubles point and the final singles point for the 4-3 win over No. 6 Texas A&M on Tuesday night at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.

The top two courts in doubles got late breaks as that proved to be the difference for the Horned Frogs (11-3) getting the early 1-0 lead over the Aggies (12-4). Alastair Gray and Trevor Johnson picked up the 6-4 win on court two before the No. 21 pair of Alex Rybakov and Nuñez scored a 6-4 win on court one over the No. 19 pair of Juan Carlos Aguilar and Jordi Arconada.

No. 12 Rybakov quickly put TCU up 2-0 in the match as he recorded his eighth straight victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win over No. 49 Arconada on court two. Texas A&M did not falter as they came back and took straight set wins on courts four and five to even up the match at 2-2. Freshman Bertus Kruger rebounded from a second-set loss to put the Frogs closer to the win with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory on court six over No. 105 AJ Caranzariti for his first win over a ranked opponent in his career. No. 114 Nuñez was looked upon to close out the match with the senior coming through successful in the tiebreaker for the 6-3, 7-6(5) win over No. 25 Valentin Vacherot for his fifth straight victory of the season and third over a ranked foe.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“Tonight was a huge road win for our guys. There were tough conditions and this is a very tough place to play and our guys were ready and more importantly resilient and mentally tough. The doubles point can be a critical point and I felt like we took advantage of opportunities and we showed a lot of poise in tough situations in doubles. In singles, we got off to a great start and as expected they fought back. I am proud of our guys for hanging in there and continuing to do what was working for them. The best part about this win is there is still room for improvement.

"I also have to give a special shout out and kudos to Cameron Norrie for setting the tone for the day after picking up a win over Texas A&M freshman Patrick Kypson earlier at the Miami Open to advance to the main draw.”
