GoFrogs: No. 23 TCU Soccer Blasts No. 14 Colorado, 6-1
BOULDER, Colo. - Seven Castain tallied four goals as the No. 23 ranked TCU women's soccer team blasted the No. 14 Colorado Buffaloes, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Prentup Field. Castain recorded the 19th hat trick in program history and became the third player in program history to net four goals in a contest and the first TCU player in the Big 12 era to accomplish the feat.
The Rundown
Colorado opened the contest up with a goal in the second minute but after that it was all TCU as the Horned Frogs would respond with six unanswered goals.
AJ Hennessey scored the equalizer in the fourth minute off an assist from Oli Peña. Peña found Hennessy at the top of the box. After stopping a rolling ball with her right foot, she found the back of the net, just eluding the Colorado's goalkeeper's right foot.
Castain converted a penalty kick after a Colorado was whistled for a hand ball in the sixth minute. The Buffalo goalkeeper guessed right on the kick, but Castain's strike was unstoppable, giving the Frogs a 2-1 advantage. The goal would stand as the game-winner and marked Castain's second game-winner of the season.
TCU would strike again in the same minute as Castain teamed with Bella Diorio to put the Frogs up by two. Castain found Diorio streaking down the left side of the pitch. She one-touched the ball to create space from her defender and found the back of the net.
In the 17th minute, Castain tallied her second goal in the first half helped along by a great service from Cameron Patton that was right on target for Castain's left foot and put the Frogs up 4-1.
Castain completed the hat trick in the 25th minute as Peña connected with Castain for the second time in the half. Peña found Castain in a one-on-one opportunity and Castain did the rest scoring TCU's fifth goal of the half.
In the 55th minute, Castain notched her fourth goal off another Peña assist. Castain sprinted past two Buffalo defenders while Peña played a great ball that allowed Castain to have a look with just the goalkeeper to beat and Castain did just that, knocking the ball into an unoccupied net.
Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell
Thoughts on the Game
"It was not the way we wanted to start the game, but really proud of the group for their response. Our preparation for this game was really good. We were able to do the things we wanted to do from an attacking perspective against what they were trying to do. That allowed us to be really successful. In the game at Baylor, we had a lot of chances but we were not composed. We focused on that during our training and thought we were really composed today and that is what happens when you are. Kudos to the group."
On Seven Castain
"She has that ability to score a bunch of goals when she is composed in front of the goal and we saw that today. That is the result of a lot of hard work in practice and outside of practice when she is working on her own. Really happy for her and proud of her performance today."
