GoFrogs: No. 22 TCU Sweeps West Virginia for 20th Win of the Season
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 20 TCU volleyball picked up its 20th win of the season, sweeping West Virginia on the road on Wednesday night inside WVU Coliseum.
It marks the first 20-win season for the Horned Frogs (20-7, 12-5 Big 12) since 2011. Melanie Parra powered the Frogs to victory, racking up 17 kills, including her 500th of the season. Redshirt freshman Becca Kelley also had a massive game off the bench, lighting the Mountaineers up for 11 kills on 18 swings. Jalyn Gibson added nine kills and 10 digs, while Sarah Sylvester tallied a season-high seven kills on a .875 clip in the middle.
Parra came out hot in the opening set, leading TCU with nine kills in the frame. She helped the Frogs quickly double up WVU at 10-5, forcing the Mountaineers to call an early timeout. TCU continued to cruise, extending its lead to seven before West Virginia crept back into the set with six straight points. With one point separating the two teams, Parra took matters into her own hands, recording the final three kills to secure the first set, 25-22.
The Frogs found themselves facing a small deficit in the second. A 6-1 run put the Mountaineers up 12-8 as they looked to even the match. Working to erase the deficit, TCU tied the set at 15, 16 and 17, but another 3-0 run gave WVU the lead right back at 20-17. Kelley stepped up big off the bench with back-to-back kills, and Sylvester tallied a massive rejection to put the Frogs in front. She recorded another big block to give TCU set point, and Gibson finished it off, helping complete the comeback to take set two, 25-22.
With a two-set lead, TCU saw its 10th sweep of the season in sight. West Virginia kept pace with TCU in the early going until the Frogs went on a 5-1 scoring run into the media break. Leading 15-11, TCU increased its advantage, feeding Kelley, who tallied seven kills in the set alone. The Rockwall, Texas, native finished off the night with an ace to cap off the Frogs' first sweep in Morgantown since the 2015 campaign.
No. 22 TCU closes out its regular season on Friday, Nov. 29, against Cincinnati at 1 p.m. CT.
