GoFrogs: Men's Tennis Takes Down No. 6 Texas A&M

MADISON, Wisc -- TCU men's tennis (5-4) tallied its second Top-10 sweep in as many days as the Horned Frogs toppled No. 6 Texas A&M, 4-0, Sunday morning at the ITA Indoor National Championship in Madison, Wisc. TCU won the doubles point for the third time this weekend and collected singles wins from Sander Jong, Luc Fomba and Jacob Fearnley in the win.

The win gives TCU a 2-1 record on the weekend, with a combined score of 10-4. This was the 40th all-time win over Texas A&M. TCU leads the all-time series, 40-16, including a run of seven straight, dating back to January 24, 2015.

"I feel that our guys showed a lot of character this week," head coach David Roditi said. "We came in after three tight losses, not playing our absolute best, and we had a choice. We were either going to rise up to the challenge, or not, and we did. We learned this week about what works for us and the mindset that we need to give ourselves the best chance to win. That was probably the best part of the whole trip was for us to know that. Jacob Fearnley specifically won the match because of that mindset. I'm happy for him to get that feeling of clinching a big match. I'm excited to get back on the practice courts and get ready for the outdoor season. Huge thanks to our athletic trainer, Maxx Akel, who had to work around the clock to allow us to be healthy and put a strong lineup out there all three matches."

DOUBLES RECAP
The Horned Frogs faced adversity early as all three teams fell behind a break after three games. But all three pairings rallied to break back before claiming wins on courts two and three. TCU finished the weekend with all three doubles points, putting up a 6-1 record.

The No. 2 team of Sander Jong and Tadeas Paroulek fell behind, 0-2, before rattling off four straight games to go in fron, 4-2. After the Aggies got a break to go back on serve, Jong/Paroulek buckled down for their third break of the set before holding serve for the match, 6-3. The pairing was lethal under pressure, winning all three deuce points en route to the win. The duo is now 5-2 this season and finished the weekend with a perfect, 2-0 record.

On court three, Luc Fomba and Bertus Kruger fell behind, 0-2 as well and, just like No. 2, the pair broke back to take a 4-2 lead. From there, they held serve for a 6-4 win. It was the second time this weekend Fomba/Kruger clinched the doubles point and their third win of the weekend. The pairing is now a team-best 6-1 this season.

SINGLES RECAP
The hard work from doubles play carried over into singles as the Horned Frogs claimed wins on two, four and six to earn their second sweep of the weekend.

The first to finish was No. 6 Sander Jong. Jong capped off a stellar weekend with his third singles win: 6-3, 6-2. He won all six sets at the tournament, finishing with a 5-0 record in all matches. Today, Jong brought a businesslike mentality to the match, catching a break in the middle of his opening set and holding for a 6-3 win. In the second, Jong cemented his place with a pair of breaks to go ahead, 3-0. He would win another break later on to give himself the win. He was 4/8 on break points. Sander is now 4-2 on the season.

At No. 2, Luc Fomba announced himself as someone to be feared in the college tennis world with a 6-0, 7-6(5) win over No. 34. Fomba used his entire arsenal to secure the win. In the opening set, he cashed in on 82 percent of his first serves (9/11) while dominating all six of his opponent's second serves. His quickness and aggressive play helped him claim a 6-0 win, his second such set this weekend. In the second, he leaned on the serve. The set began with back-to-back aces to give him an early hold. He couldn't manage a break this set but never let that affect his service games. By the end of the set, Fomba had eight aces, including two in the eventual tiebreaker. An aggressive second serve clinched the match for Fomba who finishes the weekend with a pair of singles victories. Fomba's dominance was on full display early in his second set (6-0, 1-0), when he had won 19 of his last 20 games dating back to the last match.

The duel was clinched on court four where Jacob Fearnley showed tremendous mental toughness to battle back from a rough opening set to get the win in three. Fearnley executed his dazzling return winners to perfection in the later stages of the match as he won the second set with his second break of the day. In the third, the servers were irrelevant. Both players showcased high quality tennis as they battled for the lead. Fearnley jumped in front, 4-2 with a pair of breaks. But he would drop his next two service games to tie the match, 5-5. After a crucial hold, Fearnley managed a signature return ball on his opponent's second serve to earn his first clinch of his college career. It was Fearnley's first singles victory of the weekend and advanced his record to 3-2 on the season.
