Horned Frogs Win 6-1; Sweep Doubleheader

TCU made quick work of the Broncs in singles

Box Score

FORT WORTH – The TCU men’s tennis team won 6-1 over UTPA on Saturday evening to finish off a sweep of its doubleheader at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The No. 36-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 15-5 with their third-straight win and eighth win in their last nine matches. UTPA slipped to 6-13 this spring. The 15 wins are already TCU’s most in a season since 2008, when the Frogs went 20-8.

"We had very good energy and I liked the correction from this morning," TCU coach David Roditi said. "It was good to get two wins today to take some momentum into the Big 12 season."

TCU raced out to a 1-0 lead in the match with quick wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to clinch the doubles point. No. 79-ranked sophomores Nick Chappell and Will Stein struck first, dropping Felix Hasselberg and Sebastien Job, 8-1.

Max Stevens and JT Sundling followed the lead of the Frogs’ top duo with an 8-4 downing of Ricardo Hopker and Chetan Panditi and No. 2 doubles. TCU’s third tandem, Rodolfo Bustamante and Blake Wiggins, led 6-5 when their match was stopped after the point was clinched.

Bustamante tallied his fourth-straight singles win for TCU’s second point, a 6-0, 6-1 dismissal of Job on the fourth singles court. Bustamante is 12-6 this spring and played No. 4 singles for the first time.

Moving up to the No. 2 spot in the lineup due to rest for Chappell and Orlando Superlano, Facundo Lugones grabbed his second win of the day, a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at the expense of Hopker. His win pushed the Frog lead to 3-0.

No. 119 Arnau Dachs clinched the Frogs’ win when he took care of Thomas Panoulas, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. The sophomore from Vic, Spain, ran his season mark to 14-3 and is 25-5 overall in his first season at TCU.

After the match was in hand, Wiggins added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hasselberg at No. 6 singles. It was the Frisco, Texas, native’s third win of the spring. JT Sundling scored TCU’s sixth point, a 6-3, 6-4 win over Panditi at No. 3 singles.

UTPA’s lone win came at No. 5 singles in a third-set super tiebreaker after the match was clinched for the Frogs.

TCU returns to action April 5 when it travels to Oklahoma State to begin Big 12 play. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
