GoFrogs: TCU Rolls at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 8 TCU men's tennis team opened the decade in style Saturday afternoon, going on the road to take down No. 25 Arizona State, 5-2. The Horned Frogs took the doubles point before claiming the first four singles matches to start the 2020 season with a win.

""Obviously it is nice to get a Top 25 win on the road to start the season," head coach David Roditi said. "One of the highlights for us was being down a break in all three doubles matches and finding a way back and even winning two of them. It showed poise and maturity from our squad. I was very pleased with our performance in singles. We did some things well and some not so well. We need to continue to improve, get healthier and continue to build during the non-conference season. ASU and coach Hill were amazing hosts. We were here for a few days and they could not have been more accommodating. They have a good time and I hope they get healthy soon. Go Frogs!"

DOUBLES RECAP
The Sun Devils pressed the issue to begin doubles play, earning breaks at No. 1 and No. 2 in the first two games of each. TCU's No. 2 pairing, Sander Jong and Tadeas Paroulek, responded well, breaking back on the very next game to bring the match back in contention, 1-2, before holding serve and going up a break of their own, 4-2. The duo held serve for the rest of the match to give TCU its first victory of the afternoon.

At No. 3, the pairing of Luc Fomba and Bertus Kruger had a similar story, going down a break, 2-3 before breaking back the next game and eventually holding a lead, 6-5. With the victory in sight, the duo showed their strength, breaking ASU to grab the win and secure the doubles point.

At No. 1 Alastair Gray and Jacob Fearnley went toe-to-toe with the No. 27 ranked pairing from ASU, coming back from being broken in the first game to force a tiebreaker. The match would be suspended as the tiebreaker begun due to the results on the other courts.

Doubles Results
1. Alastair Gray/Jacob Fearnley (TCU) vs. No. 27 Tim Ruehl/Andrea Bolla (ASU): 6-6, unfinished
2. Sander Jong/Tadeas Paroulek (TCU) d. Tom Leblanc/Makey Rakotomalala (ASU): 6-4
3. Luc Fomba/Bertus Kruger (TCU) d. George Stoupe/Christian Lerby (ASU): 7-5

SINGLES RECAP
Momentum from the doubles comebacks carried over into singles play as the confident Horned Frogs jumped all over ASU in the opening sets.

The tone was set by Alastair Gray in the No. 1 match as his serve dismantled No. 99 Rakatomalala. It would take until the sixth game before Gray won his break and held serve for a 6-3 first set win. His precision and shot making proved too much to handle in the second set as Gray broke down the ranked opponent to the tune of a 6-0 set win, his first bagel of the season. Gray would not be broken in the match while winning four of eight return games.

Luc Fomba used his powerful frame to his advantage at the No. 3 slot. The towering Frenchman feasted on second serves as he forced his opponent into uncomfortable positions late in the opening set, winning the last four games to win, 6-2. The second set would follow a similar script as both players exchanged breaks on their way to a 4-4 tie. But, just like doubles play, Fomba took advantage of his match point opportunity on his opponent's serve and got the break to win the set, 6-4.

Jong's impeccable return game was on full display at the No. 5 spot as he won breaks on five of his opponent's eight service game. Jong dominated the first set, 6-1 and left no room for hope in the second, going up a break in the first game and cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 win. His victory came just after Fomba's, clinching the duel for the Horned Frogs, 4-0.

Jacob Fearnley, playing in his first spring action as a Horned Frog, proved his preseason ITA ranking at the No. 4 position. The freshman jumped up by two breaks, 4-0 before delivering the final blow on return once again, 6-1. ASU regrouped to start the second set, going up a break ,1-3. But Fearnley got back to his game plan and executed wonderfully on his way to winning the next five, including pocketing his fifth break of the match to clinch the win, 6-3. He would finish with wins on five of his opponent's eight service games.
