GoFrogs: Preview: No. 2 TCU to Battle No. 15 Mississippi State in NCAA Super Regional

FORT WORTH –
Just one win separates No. 2 seed TCU from a return to the quarterfinals of the NCAA D1 Men's Tennis Championship.

The Horned Frogs (24-2) host No. 15 seed Mississippi State (21-7) in an NCAA Super Regional dual at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

TCU punched its eighth straight ticket to the round of 16 with a perfect weekend sweep of UT Arlington and No. 19 Texas A&M on May 5-6 in the Fort Worth Regional. The Bulldogs fended off Alabama State and Middle Tennessee in the Starkville Regional to set up Saturday's showdown.

A win over Mississippi State sends TCU to its fourth straight Quarterfinals and sixth in the last eight postseasons. No program nationwide has made more Elite Eight appearances since 2015 than TCU.

Saturday's dual marks the second Super Regional meeting between TCU and Mississippi State. The Horned Frogs defeated the Bulldogs 4-2 on May 11, 2019, in the inaugural Super Regional round of the NCAA D1 Men's Tennis Championship. Prior to 2019, NCAA Tournament third round matches were contested at a neutral site. In the victory over Mississippi State, then-freshmen Luc Fomba and Sander Jong earned a victory as TCU's No. 3 doubles pair. Fomba was also victorious on court five in singles play.

TCU and Mississippi State have played on a near-annual basis over the last four seasons. Saturday's match will be the fifth time since 2019 the Horned Frogs have squared off with the Bulldogs. TCU is 4-0 overall and 2-0 in postseason play in that span. The Horned Frogs downed Mississippi State 4-1 at the 2019 ITA Indoor National Championships and claimed consecutive indoor duals in 2021 and 2022.

Fans can purchase tickets to the Super Regional in one of two ways; online on the TCU tickets page on GoFrogs.com or in person at the gate for $5 (cash only).

The match will be streamed for free on PlaySight and in conjunction with a Cracked Racquets cross court cast, which can be accessed on the D1 men's tennis home page on NCAA.com.

Three of the victories were road or neutral site wins against NCAA Tournament national seeds (vs. No. 4 Kentucky, vs. No. 6 Georgia, at No. 8 Tennessee). The Horned Frogs outscored the SEC by a combined 17-3 margin across the four triumphs, all of which came against teams ranked in the ITA top-20.
  • Fomba and Jong are matching up with Mississippi State for the fifth time in their TCU tenures. Fomba holds a 6-2 career overall record (3-1 singles, 3-1 doubles) vs. the Bulldogs. Jong is 4-1 all-time (2-0 singles, 2-1 doubles) opposite Mississippi State.
