GoFrogs: Duo Collect ITA Regional Awards

FORT WORTH, Texas – Two members of the TCU men’s tennis team were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) this on Monday with senior Trevor Johnson and junior Alex Rybakov garnering Texas Regional awards.

Johnson garnered ITA Texas Region Most Improved Senior, while Rybakov became the fourth straight Horned Frog to earn ITA Texas Region Player to Watch honors.

Johnson, who played at the No. 6 singles position his first three years on campus before moving into the top two positions this year, was never ranked in singles until his final season at TCU and currently sits at No. 65 in the Oracle/ITA singles poll. The senior entered the Oracle/ITA rankings in singles the first week of February and has not left reaching a career-high ranking of No. 47. The Las Vegas, Nev., native is currently has 16 wins on the season and seven over ranked foes. Johnson has played at the top two positions in both singles and doubles all season long and earned a ranking of No. 83 in doubles with Alastair Gray and was able to upset at least one ranked opponent. Johnson earned All-Big 12 First Team honors in singles for the first time in his career, while also being named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in doubles for the second straight season.

The captain for the 2018 season, Rybakov has been the top performer in singles and doubles for TCU to help lead the team to its third straight Big 12 regular season title. The junior has posted an 18-5 overall mark this season in singles while also defeating 11 ranked opponents. Rybakov is currently ranked No. 21 in the Oracle/ITA singles poll and was ranked as high as No. 12 this season. In doubles, Rybakov has gone 17-4 overall with a 4-0 mark in Big 12 action and is 9-1 against ranked foes. Rybakov has paired with Guillermo Nuñezthis season and played at the No. 1 position all season long. The duo reached as high as No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA doubles poll and currently sit at No. 6. Since February, Rybakov has won 11 of his last 13 matches completed in singles and helped lead TCU to a 12-match winning streak. The Coral Springs, Fla., native was named to the All-Big 12 singles and doubles first teams for the third straight season.

TCU recently finished the 2018 season by advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship for the fourth straight season and 17th time in program history. Rybakov and Johnson earned at-large bids to the NCAA Singles Championship that will begin on Wednesday, May 23, while Rybakov will also compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship with Guillermo Nuñez that is set to begin on Thursday, May 24.
