GoFrogs: TCU Drops Heartbreaker to UNC

CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 15 TCU men's tennis team could not complete the comeback as No. 8 North Carolina came away with the 4-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2019 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago, Ill.

The Tarheels (7-1) took the early 1-0 lead on the Horned Frogs (5-3) after capturing identical 6-2 victories on the top two courts in doubles. TCU responded in singles action as freshman Sander Jong posted his second straight victory and his first over a ranked opponent as he upset No. 84 Mac Kiger, 6-2, 6-1, on court six. North Carolina regained the lead with a straight-set win of their own on court two before No. 83 Bertus Kruger evened it up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 77 Brian Cernoch on court four.

The final three courts went to the decisive third set as North Carolina gained the upper hand with the win on court five. No. 8 Alex Rybakov responded with a big 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 victory of his own on court one over No. 52 William Blumberg to send the match decision down to the final court. North Carolina was able to get an early break on court three and never looked back as No. 36 Josh Peck was able to down Reese Stalder, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-1, to clinch the victory for the Tarheels.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"Today was a tough loss. North Carolina is always good and always well coached. We needed to play much better in doubles and they took it to us. We didn't have a chance. We rebounded well in singles again and some guys better than others. The highlights today are the performances by Bertus (Kruger), Sander (Jong) and (Alex) Rybakov coming back from being down a set and break against one of best college players in the country. We can handle certain moments better next time. We as a team didn't handle it correctly, including myself. At this level, the margin is so small so we will continue to tighten things up."
