GoFrogs: Mapaya, Mile Relay Advance to Austin

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – TCU track and field clinched a pair of NCAA Championship entries on Saturday night at the NCAA West Prelims in Hornet Stadium. TCU's two outdoor Big 12 Champions, Chengetayi Mapaya(triple jump) and the men's 4x400 relay, booked their tickets to Austin and will compete at the national meet.

TRIPLE JUMP
Mapaya only needed one attempt to advance. On his opening jump, Mapaya jumped 15.99m (52-5.5) and finished fourth in the meet. So far this outdoor season, the three-time First-Team All-American has won five meets, including the Big 12 Championships, Texas Relays, and National Relays. In Arkansas, Mapaya jumped 16.64m (54-7.25) to set the TCU triple jump record.

The Big 12 dominated the meet in the triple jump. Out of the 12 NCAA Qualifiers, seven came from the Big 12 including the top four finishers.

4X400 RELAY
The men's mile relay capped off the meet with another NCAA Championship berth. The group of Jostyn Andrews, Tinotenda Matiyenga, Glenn Bender, and Derrick Mokaleng followed up their conference championship time of 3:04.86 with another sub-3:05 performance. Running out of lane one, the tandem finished with a time of 3:04.39, the second-fastest in its heat and fifth in the meet. TCU has now reached the final site in the men's 4x400 relay three consecutive years.

TCU was one of only seven schools in the West to with a regional entry in all four relay events. Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, BYU, Oregon, and Texas Tech were the others.

UP NEXT
In addition to Mapaya in the triple jump and the mile relay, TCU earned two entries to the final site. Mokaleng will compete in the men's 400m and Destiny Longmire will represent the Horned Frogs in the women's long jump. The same four events finished as First-Team All-Americans at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships are scheduled for June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
