Frog Rally Falls Short at No. 20 Michigan

TCU gave Wolverines all they could handle Saturday evening

Jan. 19, 2013

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – TCU’s men’s tennis team took No. 20 Michigan to the wire in the back end of its day-night doubleheader Saturday evening, but ultimately fell 4-3 inside UM’s Varsity Tennis Center.

The Horned Frogs slipped to 1-1 after knocking off Detroit earlier in the day. Michigan improved to 1-0.

TCU went toe-to-toe with the 20th-ranked Wolverines in the doubles portion of the match. All three matches when to a tiebreaker, but only Nick Chappell and Will Stein were able to pick up an 8-7 (3) win over Barrett Franks and Alex Buzzi at No. 2 doubles.

Michigan won the tiebreakers at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles after Max Stevens and JT Sundling put a scare into Evan King and Shaun Bernstein at No. 1. The Wolverine duo is ranked 30th in the ITA doubles rankings. The doubles would prove as a microcosm for the entire match.

As singles play began, Michigan extended its lead to 2-0 before the Frogs began their comeback. Rodolfo Bustamante put TCU on the board with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Franks at No. 6 singles.

Facundo Lugones followed with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at the expense of Alex Petrone at the third singles slot to even the match at 2. The Frogs grabbed the lead for the first time as 100th-ranked Arnau Dachs upset No. 48 Vlad Stefan, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

TCU put itself in position to pull off the road upset as Orlando Superlano’s match at No. 5 singles went to a third-set tiebreak. However, the Venezuela native fell to Michael Zhu, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3) to make the score 3-3.

King downed Chappell at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the fourth match of the night to go three sets as Michigan escaped with a 4-3 win.

TCU returns to action Friday evening with UT Arlington visits the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. for the home opener.

TCU always falls short in all its other sports not football and baseball. I hate reading that line over and over. Will be glad when TCU gets it's athletes in those other sports now being part of a major conference.
