GoFrogs: Horned Frogs Inch Closer to NCAA Individual Championships Berths

FORT WORTH –
Two victories are all that stand between TCU and a trio of tickets to the NCAA Individual Championships.

Duncan Chan, Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives all advanced to day three of the ITA Central Sectional Championships main draw on Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Vives and Maxted bounced the nation's No. 3 ranked doubles pair, Togan Tokac and Giulo Perego of Texas A&M, in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-4 in quarterfinal action to begin the day.

Chan then outlasted Michigan's Patorn Hanchaikul in a thrilling 6-1, 6-7 (4), 7-5 three-set battle in the round of 16 of singles play.

The TCU trio now has two cracks at booking their reservations for the NCAA Championships, held from Nov. 19-24 in Waco. Singles semifinalists and doubles finalists automatically qualify as do the winners of two quarterfinal singles matches and a third-place doubles tilt.

Vives and Maxted, the top overall seed in the 16-team doubles draw, meet Michigan's Gavin Young and Bjorn Swenson at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday in the semifinals. On the opposite half of the bracket are Bryce Nakashima and Will Jansen of Ohio State and Rice's Arthus de la Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi.

Chan advances to face Baylor's Oskar Brostrom Paulsen, who upset No. 3 seed Jack Anthrop (Ohio State). He defeated Brostrom Paulsen, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 on March 23 as a part of a 4-1 TCU takedown of Baylor in their lone head-to-head.

Vives and Maxted broke back to level a nip-and-tuck first frame at 4-4. The senior tandem raced out to 3-0 head start in the tiebreaker.

Set two saw both teams again alternate early breaks. Level four games all and up 30-15 on receive, Vives flicked two volleys past the Aggie to score what proved to be a decisive break point. The Spaniard finished out the match on serve.

For Vives, the result signified the fourth top-five doubles win of his career. He improved to a combined 21-12 all-time vs. ranked opponents when including singles matches.

Both he and Maxted already qualified for the NCAA Championships in singles. Maxted is looking to reach the sport's pinnacle invitational in doubles for the first time. He advanced to the ITA National Fall Championships every year from 2021-23.

Chan surrendered a break on his first service game. He promptly won six straight and rolled to a commanding 1-0 head start. The sophomore later led Hanchaikul 5-3 and was playing for the match on an ad-out. Chan lost the point and briefly spiraled. He surrendered three service points in the tiebreaker and started down game point in set three, trailing 3-5. Chan rallied once more, using two breaks to fight off game point and clinch the match.

He boosted his season singles record to 9-4 with the performance. Chan is now 4-1 in ITA championship events this fall.

TCU also pocketed a pair of consolation doubles victories. Chan and Kaj Quirijns overpowered Wichita State's Kristof Minarik and Alejandro Jacome, 8-5. Julian Alonso and Filip Apltauer hung an identical score on Louis Bowden and Quintan Van Wijk.
