Guenther Headlines Big 12 Honorees

Ten Horned Frogs earn recognition

OKLAHOMA CITY – Ten TCU baseball players were recognized on the Big 12 All-Conference teams as voted upon by the league head coaches. Jake Guenther was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in addition to earning first team honors.

In addition to Guenter, Nick Lodolo was also named a first-team all-conference performer. Austin Henry, Charles King, Adam Oviedo, Marcelo Perez, Johnny Rizer, Conner Shepherd, Josh Watson and Brandon Williamson were named to the honorable mention team. Perez was TCU's lone representative on the All-Freshmen team.

Guenther had an outstanding first season at TCU. The redshirt junior reached base in his first 50 games played – which is the third longest reached base streak in a single-season in Big 12 history. Guenther's .348 batting average and .470 on-base percentage rank third in the Big 12. He is the first Horned Frog to win the Newcomer of the Year honor.

Lodolo has put together a solid junior campaign. His 2.18 ERA ranks third in the Big 12 as do his 113 strikeouts this season. He leads the team with 91 innings pitched and is holding opponents to a .202 batting average.

Henry is one of just three Horned Frogs to have played in and started all 53 games this season. He is hitting .281 with seven doubles, one triple and five home runs. His 34 RBIs rank second on the squad while his 11 stolen bases are tied for tops on the team.

King has blossomed in the starting role, making seven starts as part of 18 appearances. He owns a 3.62 season ERA in 72 innings pitched. The junior has pitched two of TCU's three complete games this year. He has fanned 45 and issued just 11 walks on the year.

Oviedo has made 42 starts in 44 appearances on the year. The sophomore ranks fifth on the squad with 30 RBIs. A .286 hitter, he has eight doubles, two triples and three home runs.

Perez, TCU's team leader with five saves, has appeared in 17 games. In 23 innings pitch, the freshman has fanned 28 while issuing just eight walks.

Rizer is another Frog to have played in and started all 53 games this season. His .309 batting average is third on the squad, while his nine home runs pace the team. Of his 63 hits, 13 have gone for doubles and two for triples. He ranks third on the team with 33 RBIs.

Shepherd ranks fourth on the squad with a .289 average in 48 games played. The junior has six double, one triple and six home runs.

Watson, who has played all 244 games in his career, ranks second on the team with a .316 batting average. He leads the team with 66 hits, 19 of which have gone for doubles and eight for home runs. His 32 RBIs are fourth on the squad.

Williamson is one of two Horned Frogs to have started every week this season. In 14 starts, he has posted a 4.48 ERA. In 66 1/3 innings pitched, the junior has fanned 73 batters.

TCU opens play in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night against Oklahoma State. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on FCS.
