GoFrogs: Frogs Hold Off Mustangs for 57-56 Road Win
DALLAS – The TCU Horned Frogs earned a one-point road victory at SMU, downing the Mustangs 57-56 and escaping Moody Coliseum with a win Wednesday evening in Dallas.
TCU moved to 4-0 with the win, while SMU dropped to 2-2 overall. This marks the sixth straight win over SMU and the third straight victory for the Frogs inside Moody Coliseum.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs led at the break, 29-24, despite just shooting 29 percent from the floor overall. TCU's defense limited SMU to just 7-of-28 (.250) shooting overall in the period though, with nine of the Mustangs' 15 second-quarter points coming from the free throw line. TCU maintained the lead while not allowing the Mustangs to drain a field goal for a total of 8:36 between the first and second quarters.
SMU shot nearly 38 percent from the field, while limiting TCU to just a 21 percent effort in the third period. That allowed the Mustangs to outscore the Horned Frogs, 20-12, on the way to a 44-41 lead after the third quarter.
TCU scored the first six points of the fourth quarter before SMU came back to regain the lead 49-47. The Mustangs hit a three-pointer with less than five minutes to play to go up 52-49, but TCU countered outscoring the home team 8-4 down the stretch to go up 57-56.
Kianna Ray hit a three-pointer with 3:08 left to play, giving TCU a 55-52 advantage. SMU later pulled within a point at the 1:43 mark, but Jayde Woods came right back with a layup of her own at the other end to push the score back up to three points. The Mustangs scored a bucket with 49 seconds left, but that would be the game's final field goal and TCU would survive with the one-point victory.
STAT OF THE GAME
6.7% - TCU limited SMU to just a 1-of-15 effort from three-point range on the evening. The Mustangs were 0-for-8 from beyond the arc in the first half and yielded just a .067 percentage in the game overall.
