SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas—TCU dropped its first game of the 2012 South Padre Island Invitational on Friday to Northwestern, 55-31, at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Sophomore forward Devonta Abron led the Horned Frogs with 12 points.
The setback dropped TCU’s season record to 4-2, snapping a two-game Horned Frogs winning streak. Northwestern remained unbeaten while improving to 5-0.
TCU had a difficult night from the field, as Northwestern held the squad to only 26.5 percent shooting overall, its worst figure of the season. TCU did manage to win the rebounding battle (38-33) while holding the Wildcats to only 38.3 percent shooting themselves, but NU outscored the Frogs by 26 points beyond the arc (6-of-19) and at the free-throw line (13-of-14).
The Frogs were held without a 3-pointer in a game for the first time since Nov. 22, 1997 vs. LIU-Brooklyn, a span of 443 consecutive games. The streak was the third-longest among all Big 12 teams.
Sophomore forward Devonta Abron led the Frogs in the scorebook for the second straight contest with 12 points and added a game-high eight rebounds. Abron made 5-of-8 attempts from the floor.
Northwestern had three players reach double figures, including Jared Swopshire, who scored a game-high 15 points, and Drew Crawford and Reggie Hearn, who totaled 12 each.
TCU kept within reach of Northwestern throughout the first half, holding the Wildcats to only 24 points in the stanza, but its own offensive struggles resulted in a 10-point deficit at intermission, 24-14.
The Wildcats took control of the game for good midway through the second half with an 11-0 run that pushed their advantage past the 20-point mark.
With the loss, the Horned Frogs fell to the consolation game of the tournament to be played Saturday vs. UAB, which dropped a 77-65 decision to Illinois State on Friday. CBS Sports Network will television the game between the Frogs and Blazers, set to tip off at 4 p.m.
