Four Frogs Collect PING Postseason Honors
Brun only third TCU student-athlete to open career with back-to-back First-Team All-America seasons
FORT WORTH—Four members of the TCU men’s golf team have been honored with postseason awards by PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Sophomore Julien Brun was named a PING First-Team All-American, while seniors Eli Cole, Pontus Gad and Daniel Jennevret joined Brun on the PING All-Central Region Team.
Brun became the first Horned Frog golfer ever to be named a first-team All-American twice in a career while joining Rifle’s Sarah Scherer (2010, 2011) and Track and Field’s Raymond Stewart (1986-87) as the only TCU student-athletes in any sport to do so in an individual capacity in their first two years on campus. Brun’s first-team honor is the fourth overall for the TCU men’s golf program, as only Alberto Ochoa (1997) and J.J. Henry (1998) had been selected prior to Brun’s freshman season.
A native of Antibes, France, Brun recently finished off another fantastic season that saw him help lead TCU to an appearance at the NCAA Championship for the 17th time in program history. He became the first Frog named as a finalist for The Ben Hogan Award after winning three tournament titles and earning top-5 positions in both the college and world amateur rankings. He posted an individual stroke average of 70.31, breaking the school record he set last year as a freshman.
Joining Brun on the PING All-America First Team were 10 of the nation’s other top golfers: Daniel Berger (Florida State), Greg Eason (UCF), James Erkenbeck (New Mexico), Max Homa (California), Michael Kim (California), Cheng-Tsung Pan (Washington), Patrick Rodgers (Stanford), Brandon Stone (Texas), Michael Weaver (California) and Cory Whitsett (Alabama).
Cole, Gad and Jennevert joined Brun on the PING All-Central Region Team to give TCU four all-region honorees for only the second year ever and the first time since 2004-05 (Colby Beckstrom, J.J. Killeen, David Schultz and Drew Stoltz). TCU was the only team in the Central Region with four golfers named to the 25-man list. Each of the three Frog seniors was honored for the first time in his career.
Jennevret finished his college career with his top season for TCU, ranking No. 60 in the final Golfweek/Sagarin national performance index. He set career highs in both scoring average (71.92) and average score versus par (+0.62) while finishing among the nation’s top-60 individuals in both categories. Jennevret’s scoring average rating ranked No. 14 among the top seasons by a TCU golfer dating back to the 1994 season. He finished tied for second on the team with top-10 finishes in five tournaments.
Gad joined Brun and Jennevret among Golfweek’s top-100 college golfers at No. 79 following a bounce-back season that marked his best as a Frog. He returned from taking the fall semester off to set single-season bests in stroke average (71.88) and score versus par (0.70), as well as top-10 (three) and top-20 (six) finishes.
Cole closed out his career with a comeback season of his own, also setting a scoring average low (72.44) after sitting out the previous year while rehabbing a broken leg. He finished the year ranked No. 105 nationally by Golfweek and matched Jennevret for second on the team with five top-10 finishes.
