GoFrogs: Dominant Start to Spring Season for Rifle

FORT WORTH – A stellar all-around performance helped the top-ranked Horned Frogs dominate Ohio State and Coast Guard to open the 2020 spring season Saturday.

The Horned Frogs fired a team score of 4,724 in the victory over Ohio State and Coast Guard. It marked the eighth best aggregate score in program history. TCU moved to 3-0 at home and 4-0 against PRC opponents this season.

Stephanie Grundsoee fired the top aggregate score in the match. The freshman finished with a 1,182, marking the fourth time in her last five matches that she has eclipsed the 1,180 mark. Senior Casey Lutz and sophomore Kristen Hemphill posted scores of 1,180 overall too. Freshman Grace Taschuk also fired a career-best aggregate of 1,173 in the match.

The Frogs had one of their best smallbore performances of the season. As a team, they fired a 2,345, their second-highest mark of the season. Individually, Elizabeth Marsh and Stephanie Grundsoee both turned in the top two scores in the match, as they fired a 588. Grundsoee's performance also featured a perfect 200 prone. Kristen Hemphill followed her teammates, shooting a mark of 585. She also shot an impressive 200 prone. Casey Lutz finished with a score of 584 to round out the counters.

Not factored into the score was Taschuk, who tied her career-high score with a 579.

The nation's top air rifle squad turned in another strong score of 2,379 in the match. Lutz paced the field with a mark of 596 and fired three perfect strings of 10. Hemphill finished second overall, posting a score of 595. The freshman duo of Grundsoee and Taschuk each fired scores of 594. Marsh posted a 586, however, her mark did not factor into the scoring.

The Buckeyes recorded a team score of 4,644 (2,293 in smallbore and 2,351 in air rifle) to place second in the match. They were led by Rhiann Travis, who posted an aggregate score of 1,169. Coast Guard turned in a score of 4,514 as a team (2,224 in smallbore and 2,290 in air rifle). Bryce Sturtz paced the Bears with a score of 1,140.
