Chappell and Stein Bow Out of NCAAs
The duo ended their season with an opening round loss to the top ranked Vanderbilt pair.

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU men’s tennis doubles pair of Nick Chappell and Will Stein ended the 2013-14 season with a first round 6-3, 7-5 loss to the No. 3 seed Ryan Lipman and Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt at the NCAA Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

After dropping the first set, the No. 11 ranked duo found themselves up a break in the second set, but could not hold onto the lead as the Commodores broke the Horned Frogs twice on their way to winning the match in straight sets.

TCU began the match with Chappell easily holding serve in the first set and Vanderbilt would continue the trend by holding serve as well. TCU looked to go up 2-1 with Stein serving and up 40-15 in the game, but the Commodores fought back to break Stein and take the lead in the match. Lipman and Austin held onto the lead and broke Chappell and Stein one last time to win the first set 6-3.

The match turned even to begin the second set, as each pair held serve through the first six games for a score of 3-3 in the set. The tide would turn TCU’s favor, as the duo broke Vanderbilt for a 4-3 lead. Stein held serve for a 5-3 lead, but that would be the rest of the games TCU would win, with Lipman and Austin taking four straight games to win the match.

With the loss at the NCAA Championships, this now concludes the 2013-14 season for the TCU men’s tennis team. Chappell and Stein finish with a 24-12 overall record in doubles action, with seven wins coming over ranked opponents. The duo were named to the All-Big 12 Doubles Team for the second straight year and reached a career-high ranking of No. 10 in the country twice.
