GoFrogs: Beach VB Picks Up Two Transfers

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU beach volleyball head coach Hector Gutierrez announced the signing of two transfers in Molly Lohman and Mandi Orellana to National Letters of Intent on Monday as the duo will join the program in the Fall of 2018.

Lohman, a 6-foot-3 native of Mankato, Minn., joins the Horned Frogs as a fifth-year senior after a four-year career at Minnesota playing indoor volleyball where she was named an All-American. Oreallana, a 5-foot-7 native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, comes to Fort Worth after spending her first three seasons competing for the LSU beach volleyball team.

Molly Lohnman – Mankato, Minn.
At Minnesota (2014-17):
2016 AVCA All-American honorable mention … 2017 & 2016 AVCA North Region honorable mention … 2016 All-Big Ten honorable mention … 2017 Preseason All-Big Ten selection … played in 414 sets and 124 matches during her four-year career … totaled 658 kills and a .356 hitting percentage for her career … finished career with 530 career blocks which ranks fifth in school history … competed on the Team USA Collegiate National Team during the summers of 2015 and 2016 … helped lead Team USA to gold in Europe in 2016 and was named Most Valuable Player … earned one Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2016 after 17 kills and a team-best 11 blocks in wins over Rutgers and Penn State … named to the Minneapolis Region All-Tournament team at the 2016 NCAA Championship … helped lead Minnesota to three straight appearances in the NCAA Championship including Final Four appearances in 2015 and 2016 … also totaled 55 service aces, 150 digs and 1,001 points during her career as a Gopher.

High School:
Competed at Mankato West High School … an all-state selection as a senior was also an all-conference selection as she helped Mankato West to a Big 9 conference title … had 115 blocks as a senior and ranked second in the state of Minnesota, while her 365 kills ranked ninth … finished her scholastic career with 853 kills, 51 assists, 94 aces, 250 blocks and 307 digs … was on the A-honor roll every semester.

Personal:
Born May 13, 1996 … graduated with a kinesiology degree from Minnesota in May 2018 … daughter of Janine and Thomas Lohman … has two older siblings, Nicole and Charlie ... sister, Nicole, swims at Gustavus.

Gutierrez on Lohman:
“Molly is coming from one of the biggest and most prestigious indoor volleyball programs in the country. Her experience practicing and playing at such a high level of college sports is going to make her transition to the beach game much easier. Molly is going to bring some physicality to our team which is hard to find these days among many other players. I am very confident that Molly is going to do great things for us this year. She also moved to California this summer to get more beach experience and I believe that is going to help her game a lot.”

Mandi Orellana – Guatemala City, Guatemala
At LSU (2015-17):
Played her first two seasons in Baton Rouge before sitting out the 2017 season with an injury … began her career at LSU playing at the No. 1 position … compiled a 19-9 record highlighted by eight victories against Top 20 opponents which included four wins versus Top 10 teams … won the gold bracket of the Tiger Sand Tournament … tallied the final point of the match against No. 17 South Carolina for the team’s 3-2 victory … was a member of the first pair to receive an invitation to compete in the AVCA Sand Championships in 2015 … earned Preseason CCSA All-Conference accolades prior to the start of the 2016 season … went 7-7 during conference play … compiled wins against No. 16 New Mexico, No. 6 Arizona, No. 18 Tulane, No. 8 Stetson and No. 5 Florida International … closed out the 2016 season securing points in 10 of the 12 matches … member of the Guatemalan National Team and competed in three international tournaments during the 2015 offseason which including the Central American Cup in Honduras, the World Cup in the Netherlands and the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

High School:
Member of the Guatemalan National Beach Volleyball Team, Dig-It Beach Volleyball Club (Guatemala) and SD Beach (Sand Diego) Volleyball Club ... won the AAU Santa Barbara Open 18s to help her qualify for the 2014 Junior Olympics and Pan Pacific games ... participated in the 2012 Federation Intertionale de Volleyball World Youth U19 Championships ... earned seven top-12 finishes at North America, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation events from 2012 to 2014 ... tallied second and fourth place finishes during the previous two U21 Central American Cups.

Personal:
Full name is Maria Andrea Orellana ... Born September 27, 1995 ... Parents are Julio and Nora de Orellana ... Has two older sisters Nora Maria and Maria Jose’ who was a pro beach volleyball player.

Gutierrez on Orellana:
“Mandi is a huge pick up for us. She has all the experience that we need for our program at this moment. Her playing experience internationally and in college makes her one of the best defenders in the country. I'm personally very excited and happy that she's coming to be with us this year.”

That does not compute.

She has five years on her clock for all sports but can only play one sport for 4 years (exceptions being waivers and the new RS rules). She played indoor volleyball for 4 years so she has one year left to play any other college sport so she is going to play beach volleyball here. The time playing indoor volleyball does not count against beach volleyball.
