GoFrogs: TCU Holds On For Win At UTA

Final Stats

ARLINGTON, Texas – TCU scored in all but two innings and withstood a late rally from UT Arlington to pick up an 11-7 victory Wednesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark. A.J. Balta and Michael Landestoy each tallied three RBIs in the win.

The Rundown
TCU opened up the scoring with a run in the top of the first. Josh Watson was the catalyst to generating the run as he singled with one out and stole second. Michael Landestoy came through with a base hit to right to put the Frogs on top.

Two more runs crossed the plate in the second as TCU’s lead grew to 3-0. Coby Boulware opened the inning with a base hit and stole second. After a walk and an error loaded the bases, A.J. Balta came through with a base hit to drive in Boulware. A misplay in left field allowed Conner Shepherd to race home.

UTA picked up a run on a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but the Frogs answered in the top of the third to restore its three run lead. Adam Oviedo led off the inning with a base hit and scored on a two-out single from Zach Humphreys for a 4-1 lead.

Balta methodically worked his way around the bases in the fifth. He drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a groundout. A balk and a wild pitch allowed Balta to score to make it a 5-1 game.

Another three runs crossed the plate in the fifth. Balta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Landestoy followed with a two-run single up the middle to push the TCU lead to seven, 8-1.

An eventful eighth saw TCU score a run in the top of the inning on a two-out double from Balta. In the bottom of the inning, UT Arlington batted around and scored five times to close within three, 9-6.

TCU restored a comfortable cushion with another two runs in the ninth. Johnny Rizertripled off the wall in right and scored on an errant throw back to the infield. After doubling, Oviedo later scored on a Boulware sac fly.

Russell Smith (2-2) started and allowed just a run on three hits in four innings of work. He walked one and struck out four. Caleb Sloan worked two scoreless innings, while Augie Mihlbauer contributed one scoreless frame. Jake Eissler recorded his first save of the season recording the final two outs of the game.
