GoFrogs: TCU Drops 4-3 Decision to Vanderbilt
LOS ANGELES – No. 2 Vanderbilt drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to rally for a 4-3 victory over No. 18 TCU Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. Russell Smith set a career-high with nine strikeouts.
The Rundown
Sam Thompson was hit by a pitch to open the game and moved to third on a two-base throwing error. Tommy Sacco's first double of the afternoon to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
Vanderbilt kept the Frogs close and eventually tied the game at one in the fourth. The Commodores loaded the bases with one out on a pair of hits and a hit batter. Justyn-Henry Malloy drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game. Russell Smith minimized he damage with a strikeout and a ground out.
The Frogs used some two-out magic in the fifth to regain the lead. Porter Brown reached on a bloop single to left and Thompson walked to put two on. Two wild pitches later, Brown crossed home plate for a 2-1 lead. Gene Wood reached on an infield single to push the lead to two, 3-1.
Three straight Vanderbilt hits, highlighted by a two-run double from Isaiah Thomas had the game tied at three after five.
A lead-off double in the ninth by Spencer Jones set the table for Vanderbilt's walk-off win. With the bases loaded, Carter Young worked a walk to bring home the game-winning run.
Smith allowed three runs on five hits in five innings of work. He walked one and struck out nine. Drew Hill (2-1) took the loss after allowing a run on one hit and three walks. He fanned four.
