Gameday Thread, Baylor Hate Edition: TCU at Baylor

I think SMU figured out the genius of that staff. They made sure he was the coach when Dykes left.

I have fought for Dykes more than most on this board, but this is turning into a disaster. There doesn't seem to be much consistency except for mediocrity and bad. There are just too few highs. I feel like I am watching a team that is losing its drive. It really feels like I am back watching the 2013 team.
So we hired Fran without GP?

Was I supposed to type something here?
Bottom line this defense is bad. Can't stop anything. Baylor scored on all of its second half possessions. Needed to top 4th and 9 and the QB runs up the middle for 11 yards. Come on man.

Why do our linebackers keep getting washed out of plays?

You score 34 points with 444 yards of offense and no turnovers and lose ... your defense sucks and ours does. Different DC, same crappy results.

Is it personnel? That is a factor but we have better players than the results we are getting IMO.

Avalos can go as far as I'm concerned. One and done. GTFOH.
We truly have big problems on defense. Avalos has to deal with a lack of size, speed, and intensity among the players he has to work with, and he literally gambles on each and every play because of it. Sometimes the gamble pays off. Yet the Baylor Staff recognized that without a good defensive line, and a competent corps of linebackers, they could smash the ball up the middle and get good results. So they did, and due to these player issues, there wasn't a thing Avalos could do about it. He had put what players he had in place, but it was ineffective. No fixing it. Checkmate.

We have so many problems blossoming that it is hard to keep up. Lack of conditioning, lack of focus (losing will do that), loss of confidence in both the Staff and their own teammates, and a lack of will. The latter is borne of two absolutely futile seasons where the Frogs have no identity, no driving spirit. We used to be a Hard Nosed Defensive team, but we threw that away. Now, I guess, we're a Passing Team. Scores drop from the sky like lightning, but there's no rhythm or consistency. It strikes, or we punt. The other team gets to romp on us, and we have to score a zillion to have a chance.

The choice of OC in 2023 was a monstrous error, not just from a moral standpoint, but from a Football standpoint. The Whelp has an inconsistent history, just as Sonny does, and while it does have a lot of yards gained, and points scored, it hasn't generated many wins. It generally yields a winning percentage at 50%, or maybe 55%. Gaudy, but ultimately mediocre. Combined with a porous defense, it means 45% or so.

That's where we are, and that's where we will stay. We have reached our zenith, and it is not very satisfying. Sonny, and those who hired him, and those he hired, must go. Moving on from here, our lack of success and tarnishing of what was a sparkling Brand Name will continue to hurt the University as a whole. The bleeding must be stopped, and soon.

That’s them! Thank you! Couldn’t think of those names for the life of me. I’ve decided they were the talent brains behind Sonny.
But the thing is, he didn’t have the record that this statement seems to imply. He had been strictly mediocre for his entire career. He is now what he has always been. The NC season was a fluke outlier that happened because of Max Duggan, a few others, and some lucky breaks. Similar to Coach Fran, his timing was right that first year. The same way Barry Switzer won a Super Bowl the first year with the Cowboys.

I seem to recall most people kind of shaking their head and thinking, “what are we doing?” when he was announced as head coach. So, I don’t think there was any false advertisement on him. His team has performed exactly as almost every team he has ever coached, except for the outlier NC game year. That year, he just timed it right, like Switzer did with Cowboys and Fran did when LT was a senior.

we had beaten Baylor four years in a row, a rivalry game. Can't expect that to go on forever. Unrealistic expectation End of story. .

The “good” teams in our conference will win 10-11 games and at least one will make a 12 team playoff

We aren’t any of those teams and it’s largely because our coach is a freaking idiot that is amazed when we lose and no plan to fix it

He and anyone keeping him here need to go - end of story

I wish Sonny would be canned, but how do you fix a lousy team with a weak DL in the middle of the season? Our best DL left after spring ball and we weren't able to replace him. Now, we have a giant hole in the DL and teams are exploiting it. The bigger question is how do we fix it next year? Do we have 1 or 2 run-stuffing DTs on the way?

Unless you are going to write a $50 million check, then we are stuck with this staff for another year.

I expect to lose every week. When we win its a surprise.

I have season tickets and will attend no games this year.

Dykes and this staff are awful. He is killing this program.

scheiss him.
I Dvr the games now. if we win I watch it the next morning. If we lose I shrug and move on. Just don’t feel lik watching this team, especially the defense, live for 3 1/2 hours is time well spent. I was watching aggy get crushed and feeling complete joy.

I was there. Frogs are progressing but need a few more guys. Baylor rushed the field like they won the Super Bowl. I am glad we mean so much to them.
2021 Last drive Baylor QB throws interception.
2022 Last drive Baylor QB makes bad decisions and punts back to Max
2024 Last drive Baylor QB makes a play on 4th and 9.

defense couldn't stop a nose bleed so this was the drive that changed the tide for Baylor.

Good punters are an incredibly important weapon. Baylor has a punter that consistently punts for 50-70 yards. Our punter consistently gets off punts of 27-35 yards. He is supposed to be very good.
Our opponents have cannons.
We have a BB gun.
Our top of the recruiting class kicker is only average at best. Has missed an extra point or two, and his field goal kicking has not been spectacular. Short kick offs and out of bounds kick offs are to often.
Our coverage and kick receiving teams are not effective and are too often penalized.
It seems to me that the first coach to hit the bricks should be the Special Teams coach. It shouldn’t cost much, if anything, for a buy out. Start the message sending there and work ourselves up.

We got gashed for over 250 yards, and most of that was between the tackles. We rushed for just over 100 yards, and 2/3 of that is from WR and QB. I've been told on this board I don't know much about football, but I am going to guess those stats are a good indicator that something is terribly wrong.
You are correct. I laugh when people pull the “you don’t know football” line out their ass.
It’s usually because they don’t have a solid response or didn’t play the game, etc. The issues of run game on both sides is beyond obvious.

It’s like the tackling issues. Man, even in just high school we got grilled by our coaches for that stuff.

The Toads don't have the personnel to play defense, no matter what system we select.

Stop. Avalos was not here last year. This team is bad across the board. Avalon does not coach at all the positions. This team is bad across the board.

Sonny has to go, along with the AD and most others!!

The personnel on this team doesn't match up with any Big12 team, and that's a fact, Jack. To be fair, let's include the staff's mes-match.

This is amusing, looking at the Cowboys presently and they remind me of TCU. No run defense, no offense line, no RB, If it wasn't for Hoover, Williams, Deal, J.P., and one other WR, TCU couldn't beat Trail Lake Automotive Academy.

SD has a tolerance for poor play, no demand for excellence from the players or coaches…. content with average, and that’s what we have…

Have you even looked at the roster? Have you seen the size and speed?

Obviously not.
