I know Franchione was a selfish opportunist, but he highly recommended Gary Patterson on his way out the door, and the rest of the story became legendary.

I seem to recall that he told TCU that Patterson was not ready to be a head coach. Seems he wanted GP to move on with him to Alabama

It wasn’t for a year or two later that the extent of the payments and corruption was known. By then it was painfully obvious TCU fans were doomed to at least another decade of losing. It was beyond sickening to dream of what might have been.
Then Dennis Franchione finally saved us with 3 winning seasons in a row and 2 bowl wins, including a convincing 2 score 1998 Sun Bowl win over USC that put TCU back on the map.

I remember attending Monday at TCU in spring of 1998 as I was considering attending TCU. As we started to walk through campus we passed by the stadium leaving the alumni center and the tour guide said we are so excited for football season with our new football coach. TCU football had just gone 1-10 and TCU basketball had earned a 5 seed to the NCAA tourney and I remember thinking, yeah right, this is a basketball school, lol. Boy was I wrong. But I became a TCU fan at the perfect time. 1998-present is all I know.

Well, 9-4 isn't bad when you consider the 35-40 years before he got here. I graduated in 83, 1 or 2 win seasons was the norm at TCU for a very long time. I complain myself now when we go "just "8-4 or 7-5. The standards and expectations definitely are higher at TCU, as they should be, because of Patterson.
