Three takeaways from TCU men's basketball game at Colorado

By Steven Johnson

FTW_BaylorvsTCUcbkb21.JPG

After surviving a brutal opening eight games in Big 12 play that featured four ranked opponents and two rivalry games at Baylor, the Horned Frogs had a chance to begin stacking wins with their league schedule easing up.

Instead of taking advantage of facing a lesser opponent, the Horned Frogs trailed by as many as 28 points in the second half.

TCU remained within reach after Brock Harding made a 3 to cut Colorado’s lead to 48-35 with 16:18 remaining. But the Buffaloes would use a 16-3 run to pull away from TCU and take a 64-38 lead with 10:49 remaining. The Buffaloes’ execution offensively was a stark contrast to the Horned Frogs’ offense which was often aimless and once again struggled to find efficiency behind the 3-point line.

Unless we run the table and make noise in the conference tournament, I expect we will likely be looking for a new HC. Buddie has made it clear what his expectations are, and this program is going in the wrong direction in a hurry. I think we all have a deep appreciation for Dixon and will always be a legend here. But sometimes you have to know when to move on before the ship sinks entirely. We are dangerously close to being right back where we were under Trent Johnson. I think we HAVE to make a move before it’s too late.

So sad because the potential is there. However, we panic and try to double team 40 feet away from the basket leaving the other team open for layups and three pointers...and we do that against bad teams that we could just beat straight up. Instead, they hit a few threes and get momentum that never fades because we wait until the game is over to adjust.

I'm partial because I went to the buzzer beater game that Jaime hit back in the day...but his stubbornness to stick with such a flawed scheme is his own downfall. Anyone can see that leaving the other teams' best shooter wide open is just so painfully obvious going to get you beat, that everyone but the coach knows it's losing game after game. It is what it is...which is just a painful thing to watch.

If I’m Buddie, I’m firing this joker the second after his 100th conference loss. Which is one game away.

Wonder if there’s some ability for Buddie to force Dixon to bring in some hot assistant coach and try and give them more authority on our strategy and playbook and let Dixon be more of a CEO recruiter type.

honestly don’t know if that’s even doable with how small basketball coaching staffs are. But I do think there’s enough of a pattern now that a change in direction by some methodology is necessary going forward.

Has Dixon really been doing a good job recruiting lately?

With what we can offer - things like no tradition of winning, not much media respect/interest, an apathetic fan base and a half full stadium at best for at least 50% of the home games (with sellouts often being 60-40 support wise and we're not always the 60)?

Yeah, I'd say he has, for the most part. We get raw talent. But I, like many, are sometimes frustrated by the on court strategy. I'm not in the fire CJD camp, but we need some outside input into the in-game I think.

To me the biggest concern is can Buddie rally the BMD’s to pony up the buyouts (assts too) and pay for the new staff. I’m hearing that there isn’t a ton of support for a change. If Buddie wants a change he has his work cut out for him.

This was a fair point. Even early on , when we had the momentum and reinvigorating at the beginning years of his tenure, we've not had the fan support and home court really needed. I think that led to dixon trying to go to UCLA. Writing was on the wall, last chance for a blue blood job.

I don't know a ton but i know our NIL is lower middle of pack in the big12. And , in spite of that this year we've been super competitive. Seems like every year, we have the injury bug. Don't know what to make of that.

I don't think there are 25 teams better than us but the schedule has been brutal. I live in CO and was at game sunday. we looked gassed, and early on it was clear the officials weren't calling it one way. In addition, even when dixon put edwards in and the younger guys, it was clear that they aren't ready for big minutes IMO. Mental mistakes on defense galore. Last thing ill say: Our PGs this year specifically, as of late have had so many head scratching decisions, missed deflections etc. i know nothing and will let you read between the lines but i've had more than a few moments this season especially as of late, wondering if there are more nefarious things at play...Probably way off base but i wish i didn't get that feeling. Harding was so good earlier this year. He was carving defenses getting into lane etc...and i wish i were joking.

Another note: I hate this conference. I think narratives play a big part. For instance..colorado NEEDED this game, losing what, 6 in a row? They had to have it. This conference is so deep that there is always a reason the other team needs it, especially when you're a middle of the pack team. WE got mugged at phog allen the last few mins. Nobody will change my mind. Same vs BYU. we've been right there this whole year. I've never seen a conference that i feel is so focused on parity. I really think it shows up in the officiating. For all teams. If you aren't top 4 you're really stuck. I think this year we'd be top 3-4 in every other p5 conference. At worst.

i dont think a change is necessarily needed, and in basketball my opinion is this : if you're going to eat a buyout, buy some F****** players instead and go all in for a year or 2 to see what happens. I don't think TCU is a destination job . Find a way to go buy a roster

It's almost like we should have moved on from Dixon after we had to refuse to reduce his buyout and threaten legal action to keep him here.

We won tournament games for the for the first time in 40 years and were seconds away from the sweet sixteen since that happened.

Of course we’ve regressed the last two years. I was willing to give him a chance after the Collins injury left us without a PG. This year is really no excuse, we’ve flat out under achieved as I think we have several useful players.

4 more years of paying Jamie $4M annually, plus his staff. Paying better players would be great. But even Stevie Wonder could see that our defensive strategy at Colorado was a disaster.
