FWST: TCU's Patterson wants to build fence around area football recruits

Special to the Star-Telegram

In its first season in the Big 12, TCU's recruiting class ranks in the middle of the road, just as it did in the Mountain West.

But most recruiting analysts agree that, beyond the website rankings, there are some history-making storylines.

It all began when Arlington Martin running back Kyle Hicks jumped the Texas Longhorns ship and switched his commitment to TCU in early December, becoming the first player TCU has flipped from Texas in the modern era of football recruiting.

Next was Auburn, Ala., athlete Cameron Echols-Luper, who switched his pledge from Texas A&M to TCU on Jan 13. ...

"I think the biggest impact is Gary said they wanted to build a fence around the Metroplex and I think they've done that so far," Clark said.

I wouldn't say that. Knox, Oliver, Rhodes, Vaenuku, Manning, Samples ... we're doing well in the Metroplex, but that's a mighty leaky fence.

It's more about making sure we get the biggest recruits coming out of here. We have to convince them to stay home instead of going to OU, UT or A&M.

Getting kids they don't have room for is nice but its not the same. We want them commuting to us first, not after they realize that they won't be getting any playing time under Sumlin.

Rome wasn't built in a day! The tides are turning and soon TCU will take claim to the top of the pyramid! Then GP is going to invert another pyramid on top of the pyramid he already has to form an hourglass. All Hail The Hourglass!

How many "next-level DEs" does TCU currently have in the league? 1?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/college

Yes, one. In fact, this website debunks a lot of myths that have manifested over the years about Patterson's ability to out-develop the competition. In particular, the myth that Patterson has turned TCU into DE and Linebacker U. Lets look closer.

Number of currently active NFL players per Big XII school:

Texas - 42 (4 DE's, 6 LB's)
OU - 25 (4 DE's, 3 LB's)
OSU - 20 (2 DE's, 1 LB)
K State - 16 (0 DE, 4 LB's)
W Virg - 15 (1 DE, 2 LB's)
Tx Tech - 13 (1 DE, 2 LB's)
Baylor - 12 (0 DE, 0 LB)
TCU -12 (1 DE, 3 LB's)
Kansas - 8 (0 DE, 2 LB's)
I State - 6 (0 DE, 1 LB)

At 12 active NFL players, TCU falls well short of the average number of NFL players per Big XII team (16.9) and below the median number (15). And, with the exception of Iowa State and Baylor, TCU hasn't shown any significant superior ability to develop defensive ends and linebackers over their Big XII counterparts. Thought this was interesting.

The "recruiting wall" around DFW is more hotair until we can improve our recruiting profile from when we were in the MWC. When will this happen? Next week? Next Year?

I remember what happened to the last guy who wanted to "build a fence around the metroplex" in recruiting. Just a silly concept and if you look at the area recruiting TCU not really doing anything close to building a fence.

Listed in Rivals order by offer:

QBs TCU offered Thomas, Hill, & Webb-no commits (very poor)
RBs no offers (no grade as weak RB class in area though Hicks probably RB)
Receivers offered Oliver, Rhodes, Hunter, Adeboyejo-no commits (very poor and area of need)
TE-offered Morgan, Gaines, Reese & Reid-Reid commit (Reid better than they list and they have him #4 in area but #2 in state????)
OL-offered Perkins, Aguilar, Wilson, Hammad, Gustafson, Morris-Morris commit (Morris is very good and area has some of the best but poor showing if building a fence)
DL-offered Manning, Robinson, Hall, Arnold, Vainuku, Smith, Henderson, Noteboom-commits Henderson & Noteboom (most likely OL). (comments same as OL)
LBer-offered Mitchell, Mastrogiovanni, Wade, Davis, Douglas, Hines, Phillips-Douglas commit (Douglas underrated here but poor showing in area especially considering needs)
DB-Offered Miles, Baltimore, Texada, Wesley, Early, Walker, Calvin-commits Baltimore, Texada, Wesley & Calvin (did very good in this area)
Ath-offered Raulston, Hicks, Gonzales-commit Hicks

How realistic of a shot do the frogs have at getting Billings and/or Hall?

Billings-seems the favorite changes daily but think he goes to BU as that appears to be where his mother prefers. However I don't think anyone has a great feel for where he is going between UT, TCU & BU though most think UT running 3rd.

Hall-TCU would be a surprise but made a huge push at the end.

Also, if you put the recruits in order of ranking, TCU has from the top 50 area (5):

12-Hicks
32-Morris
39--Douglas
41-Henderson
42-Texada

None in the top 10 though offered all but Wilson and only one of the top 25.

Jerry Hughes has moved to OLB, that makes 5 LBs. Tank Carder, David Hawthorne, Jerry Hughes, Darryl Washington (who just happens to be one of the best in the league), and Jason Philips. After Kenny Cain gets a late draft pick, it'll be 6. Tanner Brock would have made it 7, but that had a different outcome. Realistically, our most recent starting LB to not go to the NFL will be Tanner Brock, to find one before him, you have to go back before 2008, I believe.

Yes, if we are building a fence, then I seriously question why it took so long to offer guys like Robbie Rhodes. Slow-playing recruits does not mesh with the "building a fence" philosophy.

I counted Jerry Hughes as a Defensive end. So, move him to LB, and TCU has 0 DE's in the league... quite the contrary of TopFrog's claim that Hall should chose TCU due to Patterson's ability to develop next-level DE's. I did miscount the number of LB's TCU has, by one. My apologies, but the difference still isn't significant enough to claim that TCU is on another level compared to other Big XII schools. TCU still finds itself somewhere in the middle.
